Today almost everyone knows computers and the Internet. If I ask you "What is the most important thing in your life?" maybe you will say "Computers and the Internet".
The first computer was made in 1946. It was very big but it worked slowly. Today, computers are getting smaller and smaller, but they work faster and faster. What can computers do? A writer has said, "People can’t live without computers today."
The Internet came a little later than computers. It is about 25 years later than computers. But now it can be found almost everywhere. We can use it to read books, send e-mails, do some shopping, play games or make friends.
Young men, especially the middle school students like the Internet very much. They often go into the Internet bars as soon as they are free. They make friends on the Internet and maybe they have never seen these friends. They don’t know their names, ages and sex. They are so interested in making the "unreal friends" that they can’t put their heart into study. Some of them play the games in the Internet bars all day and all night. Many of them can’t catch up with others in many subjects because of that.
Now the government has done many things. Some gangster Internet bars(黑网吧) have been banned. But that’s not enough. The teachers and parents are still worrying about their students and children.

【题目】D
I used to watch him from my kitchen window. He seemed so small as he played through a crowd of tall boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would often watch the kids as they played during break.
I remember the first day when I saw him playing basketball. He ran circles around the other kids. He managed to shoot jump shots from their heads and into the net. The big boys always tried to stop him but no one could.
One day, I met him and asked him why he practiced so much. Without a moment of hesitation he said, "I want to go to college. The only way I can go is to get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball. I want to be the best. My daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.
I watched him through those junior high school and into senior high school. Every week, he led his school team to victory.
One day in his senior year, I saw him sitting in the grass with head in his arms. I walked across the street and sat down in the cool grass beside him. Quietly I asked what was wrong. "Oh, nothing," came a soft reply, "I am just too short." The coach told him that he would probably never get to play for a top ranked team — much less offered a scholarship. So she should stop dreaming about college.
He was heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten as I sensed his disappointment. I asked him if he had talked to his dad about it yet. He told me that his father said those coaches were wrong. They just did not understand the power of a dream. He told him that if he truly wanted a scholarship and that nothing could stop him except one thing — his own attitude. He told him again, "If the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count."
The next year, as he and his team went to the Northern California Championship game, he was offered a scholarship. Finally, he was going to get the college education that he had dreamed of.

Even nowadays there are a lot of misunderstandings between nationalities. Let’s have a look at what the following people have to say.
Maria Conti: I find the English people insincere (虚伪的), cold and unfriendly. They keep saying "Thank you", "I’m sorry", even when they don’t know each other. They are even polite to their own relatives! Except for helping you find your way in the streets, they aren’t really friendly and never invite you to their houses.
Giannis Sinios: On the contrary I found them both broad-minded and friendly. I was invited to people’s houses and they all showed great interest in my ideas, Greek life and people. In England I learned that it was possible to be warm, friendly and polite at the same time.
Judy Brown: I lived in both Italy and Greece for a few years. At first there were a few misunderstandings between my foreign friends and myself. For example, I once gave a Greek friend a present for her birthday. I was rather sorry that she didn’t unwrap it immediately. What’s more, she even didn’t thank me until I asked her if she liked it! I’ve learned from different experiences that a lot of foreigners find our attitude to what we English people call politeness is rather insincere. They feel that politeness isn’t necessary between friends.
【1】According to Maria Conti, it is _________.
A. insincere to keep saying "thank you" and "I’m sorry" to strangers
B. necessry for relatives to be polite to each other
C. unfriendly for the English people to help your way in the streets
D. not polite for the English people to invite her to their houses
【2】Giannis Sinios is from________.
A. England B. Greece C. Italy D. America
【3】According to Judy Brown’s experience, ___________ .
A. what the English people call politeness is rather insincere
B. the English people are less polite than the people in other countries
C. ideas of what are good manners are the same in different countries
D. ideas of what is politeness are not always the same in different countries
