【题目】 Do you want to know something about the history of weather? Don't look at the sky. Don't look for old weather reports. Looking at tree rings is more important. Correct weather reports date back only one century, but some trees can provide an exact record of the weather even further back.

It is natural that a tree would grow best in a climate with plenty of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight or rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable to an unfavorable climate can be determined by reading the pattern of rings in a tree trunk. To find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the other rings, then it is certain that plenty of sunny and rainy weather occurred. If the rings are close together, then the climate was bad for the tree.

Studying tree rings is important not only for the history of weather, but also for the history of man. In a region of New Mexico you can find only sand--no trees and no people. However, many centuries ago a large population lived there. They left suddenly. Why?

A scientist studied patterns of dead tree rings which had grown there. He decided that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees. Trees were necessary to make fires and buildings. So, after the people destroyed the trees, they had to move.

In this instance studying tree rings uncovered an exciting fact about the history of man.

1It is understood that in a favorable climate____________.

A.tree rings grow close together

B.tree rings grow far apart

C.trees in New Mexico will grow big and tall

D.people can cut down most of the trees in New Mexico

2Why did ancient people usually live where there were plenty of trees?

A.Trees provided them with shades.

B.Trees indicated plenty of sunlight and rainfall.

C.Trees were materials for cooking and building houses.

D.Trees provided them with fruit and food.

3Scientists are interested in studying tree rings because they can tell__________.

A.a lot about what happened in history.

B.whether a particular tree was healthy or not.

C.whether people took good care of the trees or not.

D.how old the trees were.

4By studying the dead tree rings in Mexico the scientist found out____________.

A.where the people had to go

B.what the people had to eat

C.how the people left

D.why the people had to leave

5The people had to leave the region of New Mexico because__________.

A.they had cut down all the trees

B.there were many trees there

C.they had no water

D.bad weather stopped the growth of trees

【题目】 More than its influence on health, not getting enough sleep can lead to car accidents or other mistakes. Here are what sleep researchers have found about how to sleep.

How much sleep do we actually need?

It is known that all of us naturally need no less than 8 hours of sleep per night. When we sleep below six hours per 24, we’re at an increased risk of health problems. Some of us think we can make up any of those hours lost during the week on the weekends. Suddenly there is no storage system for sleep in the brain.

Can we train ourselves to need less sleep?

As a study in 1964, a 17- year- old boy named Randy Gardener stayed awake for 264 hours. How many people could do anything close to that without dying?

When you are reading this, you might say you usually get 6 hours of sleep and feel just fine . Sleep experts often compare people without enough sleep to drunk drivers: They don't get behind the wheel thinking .They are probably going to kill someone.

Can we drink coffee instead of sleeping?

Coffee can keep us awake. Remember, too much coffee may throw off our sleep and energy cycles. So avoid caffeine for 4 to 6 hours before bedtime.

Does a sense of purpose connect with sleep quality?

A new research suggests a kind of strong connection between purpose in life and sleep. People who have a great sense of purpose usually have better physical and mental health, which in turn explains their higher quality sleep. Perhaps developing a sense of purpose in life could be as useful at improving sleep as the healthy habits above.

【题目】 Do you like music? Do you often listen to it at loud volumes? You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Over 1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss due to listening to loud noise for long periods of time, WHO said. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes can harm your hearing.

The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 decibels for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.

Loud noise is harmful to the inner ear. Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells in our inner ears. These cells detect sounds. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss.

Some people might think that their music isn’t all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.

WHO said the “safe level” for most sound is below 80 decibels for up to 40 hours a week. A level of 80 decibels is nearly the same as the noise of a subway.

Word Bank:

decibel n. (dB 分贝) inner ear 内耳detect vt. 探测

1According to the story, WHO suggests that it is NOT safe to _____.

A.listen to music every dayB.watch TV for over an hour

C.listen to loud sounds for a long timeD.go to a rock concert

2The sound level of a busy road is about _____.

A.80 dBB.85 dBC.100 dBD.115 Db

3Why can listening to loud music cause hearing problems?

A.Because it puts our brains under great pressure.

B.Because it can cause hair cells in the inner ear to die.

C.Because it prevents our ears from resting.

D.Because it allows people to get used to listening to loud sounds.

4What does the fifth paragraph tell us?

A.People love to listen to loud music.

B.It’s reasonable to listen to loud music in some places.

C.People are likely to listen to music on the subway.

D.People don’t always realize how loud their music is.

【题目】 Teachers have always had to face the problem of students cheating, whether in a public school or a private school, whether among the lowachieving students or straight A students. Why do students cheat?

The main reason that students cheat is the high pressure from family. Students want their parents or grandparents to feel proud of them, or at least not to be disappointed in them. Another main reason is that it’s likely to get the correct answer rather than considering students’ abilities in school. As a result, what students care most is only scores. In addition, some students cheat simply because they’re busy or lazy.

Cheating can help you get ahead when it works and it is easy to do. The cheaters get good grades without spending much time studying. Some people think cheating makes difficult things seem easy. Cheating is a way for them to win and get what they want now. Honesty or dishonesty is meaningless if they win. They easily see the advantages in cheating, but often ignore the dangers in playing by their own rules instead of society’s.

Cheating successfully once often leads to cheating again and again. It can quickly become a habit that turns into a lifestyle. Without cheating, cheaters become afraid of failure. That is to say, it prevents the students from getting the chance to experience the achieving process. What’s more, students who cheat may feel worried about getting caught. Whether they are caught or not, these kids may feel guilty or embarrassed. Research has shown that not being able to experience trying hard directly affects one’s selfconfidence. Research has also shown that low selfesteem is the main cause of sadness.

So cheating is like using drugs-it feels good at the moment but it has rather bad effects.

The best way to teach our students is to put cheating out of their mind and love learning truly, to help them experience the satisfaction that comes from the knowledge as well as the selfconfidence. There’s an old saying that cheaters never win and winners never cheat. Kids who don’t cheat are true winners because when they win, they do it honestly.

【题目】 When our son Peter was twelve, the new bicycle he had received was stolen. Owning a bicycle was big fun to our children when they were little. They spent hours and hours, day after day, on their bicycles, riding up and together as a family a lot. Bicycling was a great way to get the kids out of the house and into the fresh air without spending the money.

When Peter and his sister went outside for a morning ride, he discovered that his bicycle had been stolen from our backyard. He couldn't believe that someone would do this.

He got a large piece of cardboard, painted a sign begging for the bicycle to be returned, and tied the sign to the letterbox. The following morning, when I went out to collect the mail, I found a white envelope with the magical words, "Buy yourself a new bicycle". There was a $ 100 banknote inside.

We were very touched that someone had the heart to do this. We'd never been able to thank the person but we guessed that it may have been one of our wonderful neighbors. Peter painted a big "Thank you!" on the sign and we left it outside for a couple of weeks afterwards, hoping the kind stranger would drive down our street and see it.

Peter was able to own a new bicycle again. As the years went on, the bicycle became older but remained just as important as before. Now Peter is 25.

All these years later we are still thankful for the stranger's kindness. We were a young family with three little children and it meant a lot to us. We still talk about it and, even now, wonder who the kind stranger was.

根据短文内容,回答问题。

1What did Peter often do when he was a child?

2Where was the bicycle stolen?

3How did the family feel after someone had the heart to give them the $ 100 banknote?

4Why did Peter put the 'Thank you' sign outside?

5Did the writer and the family remember or forget the stranger's kindness?
