"You are just like your mother. M This sentence has been said countless times. Yet surprisingly, new research has found that most people are more similar to their father.

A team of scientists in the US found that we inherited (继承) equal amounts of genes (基因) from our mother and father. But we use more of the DNA we inherited from our father. The study helps us to partly explain who we are. And more importantly,it helps us to find out whether we are likely to develop diseases.

"We know there are 95 genes that are affected by our parents," said the lead researcher. They are called imprinted genes. But now,the study has found that there are thousands of other genes that have come from our parents.

For the study, the scientists selected three different species of mice with different genes. The mice then gave birth to nine babies each. When they all reached adulthood, the team then measured every single gene of their DNA. They discovered an imbalance that swung toward their father.

41. We inherited equal amounts of genes from our parents.

42. According to the research, most people are more similar to their mother.

43. The new research helps us to partly explain who we are.

44. There are 95 genes that are affected by our parents.

45. Four different species of mice were selected for the new research.

[阅读A篇短文大意]一项新的研究表明大多数人会长得 更像自己的父亲。

Sixty years after humans first conquered Mount Qomolangma, known as Mount Everest in the West, the rubbish and human waste left by climbers is turning the world's highest peak into the "world's highest junkyard” .

Every year, more than 700 climbers and guides spend nearly two months on Mount Qomolangma's slopes each climbing season. They have left tons of rubbish including oxygen bottles, broken tents, ladders and wrappers, according to Ang Tshering Sherpa, chief of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.

It has also become a health threat to people in the area since they depend on water from rivers fed by the melting glaciers,Sherpa said.

So far the cleaners have brought down 15 ,000 kg of trash, but they don't know how much is still left behind. Nepal has not yet come up with a plan to deal with the human waste. On the Chinese side of the mountain, the local government of Tibet is hoping to collect cleaning fees from climbers starting from this year.     Some vegetables do need a lot of sun. A vegetable crop expert at the University of Maine advises putting these vegetables where they can get eight to ten hours of sunlight a day. Tomatoes and melons are among those that need the most sun.

The Rodale Institute in Pennsylvania, however, says lots of vegetables grow well without much sun. The research centre published a report about this subject some years ago in its magazine Orgamc Garcfehng. The report said many kinds of crops from blueberries (蓝毒) to beans can be grown in the shade.

The Rodale Institute says a garden should be taken care of carefully especially when you grow different kinds of vegetables. For example, rows of vegetables should be planted in an east-west direction. That way,as the sun passes overhead, all the plants will receive an equal amount of light. This is especially important when the plants grow to different heights.
