Yao Ming, the famous basketball player, was born in Shanghai in 1980. He is his parents’ only child, and he is unusual because he is very tall. His mother and father are very tall, too. Both his parents were basketball players. His mother played for the Chinese national women’s team and his father played for a team in Shanghai.

Yao Ming learned to play basketball at an early age, but he wasn’t a good player right away. Before age 10, Yao Ming didn’t care much about basketball and he wasn’t very strong. But when he was 12, his parents sent him to a special sports school in Shanghai. At school he practiced basketball very hard. He started enjoying basketball a lot, and he got stronger. And he became a much better player.

In 1997, Yao Ming joined the Sharks, a Shanghai basketball team. At that time basketball started becoming very popular in China. People saw that Yao Ming was a very talented player. When he played in the 2000 summer Olympic Games, people around the world saw him on TV.

Some Americans saw him at the Olympics, and they wanted him on their team. In 2002 he started playing with the Houston Rockets. He became one of the Rockets’ most outstanding players. Yao Ming retired in 2011.
