Grown-ups are always telling kids what to do.Do you listen to them? Usually, they know what is best for you, but sometimes can be wrong. So, China has a special law to keep people under 18 safe.It is called the Underage Protection Law(《未成年人保护法》).
Teachers can punish(惩罚)students, but they can not just do anything they like.If a teacher tries to get you out of class, you can go to the headmaster and tell him you have the right to stay in class.
School buildings and playgrounds must also be safe for children. If the things you use in P.E.class are unsafe, the school must fix them or get new ones, according to the Underage Protection Law.
Do you know anyone who can’t go to school because their parents aren’t willing to pay for it? This is also against the law, which says parents must pay for their kids’ education.
Kids have a right to privacy(隐私)under the law, which says parents and teachers can’t read children’s own letters.
The law also protects children’s health. It says there should be no smoking in schools and other places where many teenagers go.

Children arc children after all, and most of them speak their mind. When they are just toddlers(幼儿), they are all lovely and lively. And it's so interesting to watch them speak like a grown-up. But as they grow, these same kids seem annoying and ill-mannered if they try to be a grown-up.
Conflicts(矛盾)go between parents and children. It's hard to tell who are right and who are wrong. A child of 7-8 always finds some reasons to have a conflict with it's parents. Whether it is about some toy, studies, a party or a company, there is always a difference between them. And it becomes worse when they answer you back. Scientists tell us that children should be treated with care. Yes, sure they should respect their elders.
We are partly responsible(有责任的)for this. At an early age we encourage children to behave like adults, just because we find it funny. The kids on the other hand consider this same behavior as normal and get used to it. And when it is not funny for us any more, we expect them to stop it, but by then it is already too late. Only when they reach a certain maturity will the children realize that answering back and being rude are not acceptable(可接受的).Until then, most of the time their behavior is difficult to change, unless by force(暴力).And use of force is against the every good idea, as it weakens the child's confidence.
So it is one thing to bring a child into this world but quite another to make them into well mannered citizens. The best way is to be a good example ourselves, as our children are the mirrors of us adults.

Too much TV-watching can harm children’s ability to learn and even reduce their chances of getting a college degree, new studies suggest in the latest effort to examine the effects of television on children.

A second study, looking at nearly 1000 grown-ups in New Zealand, found lower education levels among 26-year-olds who had watched lots of TV during childhood. But the results don’t prove that TV is the cause and don’t rule out (排除) that already poorly motivated (有动机的) youngsters may watch lots of TV.

Why play games? Because they are fun, and we can learn even more while playing. Following the rules, planning your next move, acting as a team member — these are all “game” ideas that you will come across all through your life. They can help you in different ways.
Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are very interesting. But perhaps more importantly, they translate part of life into exciting games that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating (合作).
Many children’s games have a practical side. Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For example, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones, which improves the hand-eye coordination (协调) needed in fishing.
The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competitions. People who watch the event (比赛项目) know that a gold medal is a win for the whole country, not just the athlete who got it. For countries experiencing natural disasters (灾害) or wars, an Olympic win can mean so much.
Sports games are also an event that unites (团结) people. Football is the most popular sport in the world. People all over the world play it — some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian football player, has discovered a way to spread hope through football. He created a foundation (基金会) to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a bright future.
Next time you play your favorite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other parts of your life.
1.What are children expected to learn when they play games?
A.To act as a team leader. |
B.To follow the basic rules. |
C.To train how to move fast. |
D.To practice rope-jumping. |
2.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Games can help everybody to make much money. |
B.Games can turn real-life experiences into a story. |
C.Games can make skill learning more interesting. |
D.Games can prevent all the countries from disasters. |
3.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Games can help people in different ways. |
B.People are advised to play games for fun. |
C.An Olympic win means a lot to every country. |
D.Sports can get people all over the world together. |

Dear Victor,
I am a college student. Nowadays games on the net are very popular with college students. Some of my roommates are very interested in them. They not only play games in their free time, but also keep talking about them at night when lights are off, and they regard games as a part of their life. I’ve asked them to give it up, but they wouldn’t listen to me. It has become a rather big problem. Should I report it to our teachers or do something else?
Ted
Dear Ted,
Drop it. Your roommates, as grown—ups, can do whatever they want with their time so long as it doesn’t break school rules or violate(妨碍)other people’s interests.
Playing perhaps gives these students relaxation from hard study. If they play too often and have little time to study, they will reap what they have sown(自食其果), but you will not. Reporting to the teachers would only harm your good name in your dormitory(宿舍). However, you have rights to ask your roommates to be quiet when you need sleep. If they aren’t angry with you, they will stop talking. But be polite and friendly. Perhaps, in return, join them in a game or two.
Victor
1.Ted wants his roommates to_______.
A. break their computers
B. sell their computers to teachers
C. play games in the day, not at night
D. stop playing computer games
2. According to the second letter, some college students_______.
A. can break school rules or violate other people’s interests
B. have their rights to disturb Ted
C. can relax themselves while playing games on the net
