    19．Imagine being asked to go around the world in 80days．That's easy you might think-until you're told that you can't use air transport．You can only travel by land and sea．That changes things!But that's exactly what Michael Palin，a TV host，was asked by BBC to do in real life，just as Phileas Fogg did in an 1873fiction Around the World in 80Days．
    Michael Palin agreed to the BBC's suggestion，which would result in a series of documentary programs．He had to make whatever preparations （准备）he could before setting out from London，England．He went to keep-fit classes and he had a medical check before taking such an adventure （探险）．He talked to one or two experienced travelers who could advise him about what to do in foreign lands．He needed to think carefully about what to take and what to leave behind．
    Though a TV host，Michael Palin was more used to having scripts （稿子）to work with，not being followed across the world with cameramen who recorded everything during his traveling．He had never done anything like it before，with no script at all，on a route that might change without warning （预兆）．There were moments when he thought，"This isn't going to work．"But he did see some wonderful parts of the world and his experiences included working on a barge（游艇） in Venice，taking a battered taxi in Egypt，crossing the Persian Gulf in a primitive （老式的）sailing boat and traveling across China from Hong Kong to Shanghai．
    It wasn't just an adventure．It was a race against the clock．As he traveled across Europe to the Middle East，found his way into Asia，crossed the Pacific，took a train through America and finally sailed across the Atlantic back to England，there were times when he thought he might not make it．But he did make it-just within the 80days．His comment？"As a race，"he said，"it was pretty exciting．"
