【题目】 This is the story of a man who works in a big factory. I have seen him for years, but I've never paid any attention to him. He was a little bit weird (怪异的). He always wore an old red hat and carried a rubbish bag. He usually spent his break time and his lunchtime walking around in that big old factory and collecting used tins (铝罐).

One day, I was fixing one of the broken machines in the factory when this "tin man" came with his bag. As usual, he picked up the tins, which were all over the place. My manager was standing there, watching me.

When I finished my job, I heard my manager ask the "tin man" about what he was going to do with those tins he had collected. I never even thought about this kind of question, because I always assumed (推断) that "tin man" would take those tins to the recycling center.

Unexpectedly, the "tin man" answered, "I will give these tins to my neighbor. He has epilepsy (癫痫) and cannot work."

I was shocked to hear that, so I asked him, "You mean you collect all those tins just to help your neighbor?"

"I know this does not help much," he said. "But I give everything to him, because he cannot work. He needs help."

It was the most beautiful moment of my life. It has made me feel humble (谦卑的) every day since then.

1The writer has paid much attention to the tin man for years.

2The tin man always spent his all day collecting used tins.

3The tin man's neighbor didn't have ability to work because of his illness.

5The passage mainly tells us that we should help others in our own ways.

【题目】 Are you sniffling, sneezing or coughing? If so, you might have a virus(病毒). Viruses can make you sick. Colds are caused by viruses. Scientists have a question about viruses. They want to know: Is a virus a living thing? Not all scientists agree on the answer.

Some illnesses are caused by bacteria (细菌). Scientists think bacteria are alive. They are very, very small. Still, they do many things that living things do. They take in nutrients(营养), just as people do by eating. Then they make more bacteria. After a while, they die. Viruses are different. To make more viruses, they take over the cells of other creatures( ) because viruses need proteins(蛋白质) to survive(存活) but they cannot make proteins on their own. So they have to spread disease to people and other animals, then the virus can make proteins, which lets it make more of itself. That is one reason why some scientists say viruses are not alive. Living things can make their own proteins. Viruses cannot.

Other scientists disagree. They say viruses are alive. These scientists argue that many living things need a host. Parasites(寄生虫) are one example. They are living things. Yet they can only survive in a host. An example of a host would be a human or a dog. Viruses are not so different.

It does not really matter if viruses are alive or not. That is just a undecided question that scientists have for fun. However, there are plenty of good reasons to study viruses. Scientists want to learn more about how they work.

1You could have a virus if you________.

A.feel sleepyB.have some parasitesC.have a cold

2How do viruses make proteins?

A.By taking in nutrients.

B.By making proteins by themselves.

C.By bringing disease to people and other animals

3The underlined word take over means________.

A.接受B.借用C.生产

4Why do some scientists think viruses are alive?

A.Because viruses also need to depend on other creatures to live.

B.Because viruses have to use proteins to make more viruses.

C.Because viruses don’t need a host at all.

5Which of the following is NOT true?

A.Not only viruses but also bacteria can make people fall ill.

B.For scientists, it is still unknown whether viruses are alive or not now.

C.After spreading disease to people, the number of viruses will become smaller.

【题目】 These days, "What do you want to do when you grow up?" is the wrong question to ask children in the USA. The question should be: "What job are you doing now?" American companies are employing more and more young people as consultants(顾问)to evaluate(评估)products for child consumers. The 12-to-19 age group spends more than $100 billion a year in the USA. Specialist agencies help manufacturers ask kids about all the latest trends in clothes, food and other markets. One company, Teenage Research Unlimited, has groups of teenagers who give their decisions on products like jeans. Another company, dole Research Associated, holds two-hour meetings in a room called the "imaginarium". Children are encouraged to play games to get into a creative mood. They have to write down any ideas which come into their heads.

Some manufacturers prefer to do their own market research. The software company Microsoft runs a weekly "Kid's Council" at its headquarter in Seattle, where a group of school children give their decision on the latest products and suggest new ones.
