【题目】 “Smombies”, people walking while staring at their mobile phone are getting attention of the public. To make them pay more attention to things around them in order to avoid serious accidents, the government of a small German town has come up with a solutionthat isfixing traffic lights in the pavement to make them noticed by people who keep looking down at their phones.

The safety measure was decided after two people in the town of Augsburg were recently hit by buses as they crossed the street without looking up from their phones. Officials in Augsburg decided to actfixing ground-level traffic lights at two bus stops last Tuesday. The lights flash red whenever a bus is coming.

“We realized that many people don’t pay attention to traffic lights,”said Tobias Hermesa city official. “So we decided to have unusual traffic lights. The more we havethe more probably people will notice them.”

Some Augsburg people seem to be quite happy with the idea. “I think it does have a point,” Jack Smith said,“We always see young people these days running over red lightswhich makes it clear that we have to take action to stop this.

Othershoweverdon’t think it necessary or helpful and they are against this idea. “I find it scary that mobile phone users are so lost in their phones that they can hardly find the lights on the pavement.” One person told the local paper.

But do these pavement lights really work? “To be honest,I didn’t even notice it,” one teenager who was interviewed said ,Maybe it’s useful at nightbut I didn’t realize it was there until just now.

Arguments like that are still going on. Whether more such traffic lights will be fixed is till under discussion. Whatever the result issomething must be done to cut down the number ofSmombies as long as we don’t want to see accidents caused by them again.

【题目】 My elder cousin Ted liked complaining almost about everything. When he faced a problem, he always chose to complain about it instead of finding a way to solve it. That was not right. Ted was healthy and had received a good education. He should and could find a good job and work hard to feed himself, but he just complained all day, drifting from one job to another. One day, I read about a farmer called Chris and told Ted about him.

Chris works hard and performs many jobs around the farm. But Chris is not exactly like other farmers. What makes him different is that he was born without arms or legs. But this has not stopped him from working hard and getting things done.

Now, you may ask, is this possible? Like many other amazing people who have no arms or legs, Chris does not focus on what he can’t do, but rather on what he can do. And he can do a lot! He drives farm vehicles and looks after crops. Once you see Chris in action, you will think there is nothing he can’t do. Chris is a great example of a person who is making the most of his gifts. 【题目】 How has technology made your life easier? When you go to a shopping mall, you can enjoy free Wi-Fi there. When you want to take a taxi, you can book one with your phone. 1 The idea of a smart city was first suggested by tech company IBM in 2010.2There are many examples in our lives, such as 5G networks and the “internet of things”, they are used to improve urban planning, save money and resources (资源), and make our lives more convenient.

Of course, it will take time to build the smart cities of the future. But since we’ve already seen successful examples, it won’t be long until more cities join in. 5
