Sometimes, you just can’t help it. Maybe you’re watching a sad movie, or thinking about the friend who moved away. Why do people cry? What are tears(眼泪)? Scientists are working hard to find out the answers to these questions.

Ad Vingerhoets is a professor of psychology(心理学) at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. He is one of the few scientists in the world who have studied crying. According to Vingerhoets, there are three types of tears. Basal tears are the first type. They act as a protective object between the eye and the rest of the world. Next are reflex tears. They wash your eyes clean when something gets in them. Finally, there are emotional tears. “They are connected with our feelings,” explains Vingerhoets. “Especially when we feel helpless.”

Scientists believe that crying has something to do with how humans developed and learned to depend on each other. “Humans are very complex(复杂的),” says Lauren Bylsma, a professor from the USA. “It seems that tears serve to get help and support from others.” She says another reason we cry is that humans have the longest developmental period of almost any animal. It takes a long time for humans to grow up.

Vingerhoets approves. “I think that the reason why humans cry has to do with our long childhood,” he says. “That’s the time when we are still dependent on adults for love and protection and care. Tears were a safer way to be noticed by others. In this case, it is better to use a quiet way to ask for help,” he says.

Vingerhoets and Bylsma do lots of studies to better understand why humans cry. According to Bylsma, there is still much more to discover. “It’s surprising,” she says, “how much we still don’t know.”

1What kind of tears will run down your face when something gets into your eyes?

A.Basal tears.B.Reflex tears.

C.Emotional tears.D.Complex tears.

2The underlined word “approves” in Paragraph 4 most probably means“_____________”.

3Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.It’s easy to understand why humans cry.

B.Basal tears are a type of protective object.

C.Emotional tears are better than reflex tears.

D.The reason why humans cry has nothing to do with childhood.

Next are reflex tears. They wash your eyes clean when something gets in them.

She says another reason we cry is that humans have the longest developmental period of almost any animal. It takes a long time for humans to grow up.

Vingerhoets approves. “I think that the reason why humans cry has to do with our long childhood,” he says.

Basal tears are the first type. They act as a protective object between the eye and the rest of the world.

Scientists are working hard to find out the answers to these questions.

Long ago, when animals could talk, the camel had antlers and a long, thick, beautiful tail. So the camel was very proud of himself and he always showed off his beautiful and magnificent antlers to the others.

One day, the camel went to drink at the nearby river. A deer came then out of the woods, bowed to him, and said rather sadly:“I was invited to a party tonight, but how can I go there with such a bare forehead? Even if it is just for one hour, I wish to go with such beautiful antlers as yours. Dear friend, could you lend me your antlers for tonight? I’ll return them tomorrow, when you come here to drink.”

The camel, though he was a little vain, had a good heart and took pity on the poor deer’s bald head. So he took his antlers off and gave them to the deer, saying, “Well, tomorrow when I come to drink, you must return them to me.”

The deer quickly took the antlers and disappeared into the woods. On his way, he met a horse and told him how he had got his antlers.

The horse, who had also been invited to the party, thought he would like to find a nice body decoration, too. He then went to the camel and asked him to give him his tail. The kind-hearted camel trusted the horse and gave him his tail.

The next day, the camel went to the meeting point as agreed. While waiting, he was drinking water and stretching his neck to see if the deer and the horse would come. But none of them showed up. Many days and years have passed since then, and the poor camel has still not got back his antlers or his tail.

Because he drank too much water while awaiting the deer and the horse, the camel has got a hump full of water; and because he stretched his neck gazing long and hard for the deer and the horse, his neck has grown long.

The horse kept his tail but, whenever he sees the camel in the distance, he runs away.
