Would you pay thousands of dollars for a painting with a face so unclear that you’re not even sure it’s a face? Or a picture by unknown artist? What if the artist was a computer?
A piece of artwork created mainly by a computer programme has been sold at the price $432,500 – about ten times more than people expected. This painting, named Edmond de Belamy, was created by artificial intelligence (AI)(人工智能). This means the computer now doesn't just follow us, but makes some decisions and "thinks itself".
15,000 real paintings were used by some French students to train the computer programme with two parts. One part tries to create paintings that look real, while the other part decides if it is good. If the painting doesn't look real enough, the first part will change its decisions until it comes up with a better work.
This is not the first AI artwork, just the first piece on sale. In fact, many people are not impressed with the painting. "The work isn't interesting or creative," says Robbie Barrat, who helped create the painting but doesn't like the idea of selling it. He thinks it's too simple and gives a bad idea of what real AI artists are doing. He adds that he created many pictures like it much earlier.
In some other people's opinion, however, AI art is already very unusual. They hope it will be more common in the future.
Still, people who look down upon AI art shouldn't worry. Just as an AI artist, Theo Triantafyllidis says, he usually thinks of AI as a tool and not the artist. Even the best AI today is somewhere between a stupid child and a smart pet. It will grow up.

Sitting in front of the television may be relaxing, but spending too much time in front of it may take years off your life.Watching television less may help you live a much longer life.
Australian researchers studied more than 11,000 people over the age of 25.Their study showed that if people watched TV for six hours a day, they lived about 4.8 years less than those who didn't watch any television. Also, people who are over the age of 25 lose 22 minutes of life for every hour of TV that they watch.
Sitting in front of the television isn't healthy. The more TV you watch, the less exercise you'll get.And the less exercise you get,the more likely it is that you'll get sick.
Lennert Veerman, the researcher who led the study, says watching too much TV will be bad for people's life expectancies(预期寿命),even for people who have a good diet.He thinks it's necessary for doctors to start asking their patients about how much TV they watch,as it can be an indicator(指标)of someone's overall health.

If a friend gives us a hand when we are in need, it’s a good idea to write him a thank-you note.
1.
“People don’t seem to walk around giving thanks to people quite often,” Amit Kumar from University of Texas said.2.And how do people feel when they receive one?
Kumar and his team asked some students to write a thank-you note to another person by email. Then, they asked both the writer and the receiver how sending or receiving these notes made them feel.
They found that the students didn’t like to write the notes because they felt like they had to think too much about them.3.
The receiver, however, enjoyed the notes. “When you are a receiver, you focus on the warmth of the note.” Kumar says. “How heartfelt was it? How friendly and warm? ”
The writers also thought the receiver might be shy for receiving a thank-you note. 4.“The receiver feels quite happy,” Kumar says.“They don't really feel shy at all.”
Writing a thank-you note does have such a big influence on others.5.Simple and small changes in our everyday lives can make a big difference to the way we treat other people and how we feel.

Many of us have had this experience: we lie down in a bed other than our own, perhaps at a friend’s house or in a hotel room, and find it difficult to fall asleep. Is it because the bed is uncomfortable? Maybe, but perhaps there can be other reasons.
According to a new study published in Current Biology, a significant reason is what the scientists call “first night effect”. They believe that one side of the brain acts as a “night watch” to warn us about potential (潜在的) dangers. It forces us to stay awake on the first night in a new environment.
For the study, 35 young volunteers were told to sleep in a lab for several days. Meanwhile, researchers watched their brain activities.
According to the researchers, on their first night, the left brains were more active than the right brains and people had a hard time sleeping. However, left-brain activity reduced as days went by, falling even to the point of complete calm. In this process, the volunteers got an increasingly better sleep experience.
The findings suggest that the different rhythms (节奏) of the sides of the brain influence our sleep. When the two sides work differently, the balance between them is broken. Thus, the brain can’t relax and is sensitive to anything strange in the surroundings, just as it is in the daytime.
“At some level, the brain is continuing to analyze(分析) things, even though you don’t realize the analysis,” US professor Jerome Siegel told Smithsonian Magazine. “If something unusual happens – if a door opens or you hear a key in a lock – you can be alert (警惕的).”
More surprisingly, this situation is similar to the way some animals sleep. Whales, dolphins, and many birds can sleep with half of their brain while the other half stays awake.
If you have ever had what you think is “first night effect”, researchers suggest that you bring your own pillow or sleep in a room similar to your bedroom next time you sleep away from home.
