【题目】 Sometimes, you just can’t help it. Maybe you’re watching a sad movie, or thinking about the friend who moved away. Why do people cry? What are tears(眼泪)? Scientists are working hard to find out the answers to these questions.

Ad Vingerhoets is a professor of psychology(心理学) at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. He is one of the few scientists in the world who have studied crying. According to Vingerhoets, there are three types of tears. Basal tears are the first type. They act as a protective object between the eye and the rest of the world. Next are reflex tears. They wash your eyes clean when something gets in them. Finally, there are emotional tears. “They are connected with our feelings,” explains Vingerhoets. “Especially when we feel helpless.”

Scientists believe that crying has something to do with how humans developed and learned to depend on each other. “Humans are very complex(复杂的),” says Lauren Bylsma, a professor from the USA. “It seems that tears serve to get help and support from others.” She says another reason we cry is that humans have the longest developmental period of almost any animal. It takes a long time for humans to grow up.

Vingerhoets approves. “I think that the reason why humans cry has to do with our long childhood,” he says. “That’s the time when we are still dependent on adults for love and protection and care. Tears were a safer way to be noticed by others. In this case, it is better to use a quiet way to ask for help,” he says.

Vingerhoets and Bylsma do lots of studies to better understand why humans cry. According to Bylsma, there is still much more to discover. “It’s surprising,” she says, “how much we still don’t know.”

【题目】 My elder cousin Ted liked complaining almost about everything. When he faced a problem, he always chose to complain about it instead of finding a way to solve it. That was not right. Ted was healthy and had received a good education. He should and could find a good job and work hard to feed himself, but he just complained all day, drifting from one job to another. One day, I read about a farmer called Chris and told Ted about him.

Chris works hard and performs many jobs around the farm. But Chris is not exactly like other farmers. What makes him different is that he was born without arms or legs. But this has not stopped him from working hard and getting things done.

Now, you may ask, is this possible? Like many other amazing people who have no arms or legs, Chris does not focus on what he can’t do, but rather on what he can do. And he can do a lot! He drives farm vehicles and looks after crops. Once you see Chris in action, you will think there is nothing he can’t do. Chris is a great example of a person who is making the most of his gifts. His positive attitude and courage make him a true inspiration.

After I told Ted about Chris, he became silent. Compared with Chris, Ted was much luckier. Then luckily, I saw Ted’s change. Do you like complaining? If you do, think about Chris. Such a man chooses to stay positive. Why don’t we?

【题目】 Five years ago, when I taught art at a school in Seattle, I used Tinker toys(积木)as a test at the beginning of a term to find out something about my students. I put a small set of Tinker toys in front of each student, and said,” Make something out of the Tinker toys. You have 45 minutes today — and 45 minutes each day for the rest of the week.”

A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see what the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.

Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinker toys in his free time. His creations filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I was delighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would affect other students.

Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside, for I might lose those students who had a different style of thinking. Without fail one would declare. “But I’m just not creative.”

“Do you dream at night when you’re asleep?”

“Oh, sure.”

“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.” The student would tell something wildly imaginative. Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads. “That’s pretty creative. Who does that for you?”

“Nobody. I do it.”

“Really — at night, when you’re asleep?”

“Sure.”

“Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay?”

1The teacher used Tinker toys in class in order to .

A.make the lessons more excitingB.know more about the student

C.raise the students’ interest in artD.teach the students about toy design

2What do we know about the boy mentioned in Paragraph 3?

A.He was imaginative.B.He was active in class.

C.He preferred to study alone.D.He liked to help his teacher.

3What does the underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A.choiceB.difficultyC.faultD.power

4We can learn that .

A.most students just made something according to the model plans

B.the boy spent 45 minutes every day making a lot of creations

C.the boy’s creativity would affect other students forever

D.the student dreaming at night was also very creative.

5The best title for the passage may be

A.An Art ClassB.An Encouraging Teacher

C.Tinker ToysD.An Unexpected Teaching Assistant

【题目】 How has technology made your life easier? When you go to a shopping mall, you can enjoy free Wi-Fi there. When you want to take a taxi, you can book one with your phone. 1 The idea of a smart city was first suggested by tech company IBM in 2010.2There are many examples in our lives, such as 5G networks and the “internet of things”, they are used to improve urban planning, save money and resources (资源), and make our lives more convenient.

Cities like Boston, Amsterdam and Copenhagen are already using smart technology to improve public services 3In Amsterdam, traffic is monitored(监测)and adjusted according to real-time data gathered from sensors around the city. There are fewer traffic jams.

Smart cities will allow us to save resources. By using sensors and 5G networks to check the usage of water, gas and electricity, city managers can figure out how to use these resources more efficiently. For example, water and gas pipes (管道) could remind repair workers when there is a leak (泄漏).4

Of course, it will take time to build the smart cities of the future. But since we’ve already seen successful examples, it won’t be long until more cities join in. 5

A.In the US cities of Boston, smart trash bins can sense how full they are and tell workers when they need to be cleaned.

B.In fact, all of these things can be seen as the first building blocks of a smart city.

C.Tech Republic estimates(估计)that by 2050, about 60 percent of people worldwide will live in smart cities.

D.Air pollution could be more closely monitored, too.

E.A smart city is a city that uses digital (电子的) technology.
