Last year, around Labor Day, I read a "Happy Ad" in our local newspaper. There was a lady in a local nursing home, who was c1. her 90th birthday and her family wanted everyone to k2. about it. It said that if you wanted to drop her a line, here was her a3.. So I did. I found a birthday card and dropped her a short note, wishing her a happy birthday.
A week or so later, someone k4. at my front door. I opened the door and found a middle-aged man standing on my doorstep. He introduced himself a5. the son of this woman to whom I had sent the card. He explained that he just wanted to drop by in person and thank me for s6.such a nice card to his mom. Apparently, like many older folks, she did not receive much mail and was quite e7. to receive mine. I just didn't know w8. to say. I told him it was my pleasure and that I hoped his mom had enjoyed her birthday. That year, I did not send out any Christmas cards, e9. to this lovely old lady in the nursing home. I just told her that I was thinking about her and hoped that she had a nice holiday. I sent her a holiday card and also a couple of notes. I just thought she might like to have someone write to her, to get some mail.
She passed away a couple of months ago. I never met this lady, but I did keep her and her family in my h10.. I dropped them a line of sympathy(ͬÇé). I hope that my few little notes were enough to brighten a couple of her days here on earth.

Do you want to know how you can succeed in a new school term? Here are several tips for you from some teachers.
Use a calendar or chart (ͼ±í). Write down special tasks, activities and important dates on a calendar. This helps you remember things you need to do. You can also make a chart. Then, use colorful pens to circle or draw a line under your homework, reading tasks or other activities. By using a chart, you can learn how to plan for your study.
Buy folders(Îļþ¼Ð)in different colors. Put your notebooks in different folders according to the subject. This helps you keep papers and notes organized.
Books are great friends. Visit the bookstore or library every few weeks to find a new book to read. The more you get excited about reading, the more confident you will become.
Join all kinds of clubs or sports. It's important to communicate with teenagers outside of school. Joining sports clubs or other group activities is also a good way to help you learn how to get on with others. During this process(¹ý³Ì), you can learn how to solve problems and respect others.
Ask for help. You're never too old to ask for help. You can turn to your teachers when there is a question about homework, projects or relationships with your family members. They are there to help solve problems and listen to you.

£¨2017©q±±¾©£©Buying Is Doing?
How important is shopping to you? How much time do you spend buying things? And how much time do you spend organizing these things in your home? In the future, how much time will you spend in movie theaters, at amusement parks, at shopping malls, or at convenience stores? When you add it all up, you will probably see you spend a lot of your life consuming£¨Ïû·Ñ£©things. Consuming products is not necessarily bad. However, if we spend too much time doing it, we should look at it carefully.
Imagine that you have a week off from school. You don¡¯t have to go to class. However, in this week, you cannot spend any money ¡ª no shopping, no movies, no eating out. How would you spend your time?
What things would bring you happiness? Perhaps you would take a walk with your best friend. Perhaps you would help a child read. Or you might spend time with your family.
When we look back, it is likely that non-consuming experiences like these will be our most important memories. Why? Non-consuming activities are active, not passive. They don¡¯t come in a package. You make the experience yourself. For example, each person who reads to a child will have a different experience. The experience changes with the reader, the child, and the book. Similarly, when you have a conversation with a friend, you are actively creating an experience. The conversation that you have with your friend cannot be experienced or recreated by anyone else. However, if you watch a movie with a friend, you will each have a package experience. It requires no action and little interaction between the two of you.
The environment we live in encourages us to have packaged experiences. We feel that we must consume because we believe that buying is doing. However, we can start a personal revolution£¨±ä¸ï£© against consumerism. How? By consuming less, we can ask ourselves what experiences bring us the greatest satisfaction. Then we can organize our lives so that we have more of those kinds of experiences.

3.What is the writer¡¯s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To introduce some ways of enjoying our spare time.
B. To encourage people to have more active experiences.
C. To explain reasons behind people¡¯s shopping behavior.

What is the best-selling book in the world? Is it the Harry Potter series or Secret Garden? According to the Guinness World Records, the Xinhua Dictionary, published by the Commercial Press in China, is the world¡¯s most popular dictionary and the best-selling book.
In 1950, Chinese language experts (ר¼Ò) and scholars, Wei Jiangong and Ye Shengtao, started to edit (±à¼) the Xinhua Dictionary. There was a lot of discussion, research and paper work. However, revisions (ÐÞ¶©) the dictionary continue to be made. According to Yu Guilin from Commercial Press, editors (±à¼) usually summarize (×ܽá) the meaning of words again while revising. If the example sentences are out of date, editors need to have experiences and make new examples. ¡°To give a correct explanation of the word¡®ŸhÓÍ(deep condition)¡¯, one editor went to a barber shop (Àí·¢µê) to experience it for himself, ¡±Yu told the Beijing Times. So far, the Xinhua Dictionary has been revised 11 times.¡±
To keep up with the times, some popular and widely used internet words are also added to the dictionary. For example, in the 11th edition, the phrases¡°É¹¹¤×Ê(show off salary)¡±and¡°É¹ÕÕƬ(show off pictures)¡±were included.
All these efforts create the ¡°National Dictionary¡± of China. The Xinhua Dictionary is not only a useful tool for generations of Chinese people. It also helps foreigners who are learning the Chinese language and culture.
