科目:初中英语 来源: 题型:

I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to sit above the top of it as Mother sat writing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper,I decided that the act of writing must be a most wonderful thing in the world.

Years later, during her final illness,Mother kept different things for my sister and brother. "But the desk," she said again, "is for Elizabeth".

I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl,I wanted to have heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.

They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was "too emotional (易动感情的) ”. But she lived "on the surface (表面) ".

As years passed and I had my own family,I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.

I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.

My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest, and finally, peace―it seemed that nothing could ever happen. I couldn't be sure that the letter had even got to Mother. I only knew that I had written it,and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

But the present of her desk told me,as she'd never been able to,that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside―a photo of my father and a onepage letter, folded and refolded many times. It was my letter:

"In any way you choose,Mother, you always choose the act that speaks louder than words".

(   ) 1. The writer began to love her mother's desk         .

   A. after Mother died   B. before she became a writer

   C. when she was a child   D. when Mother gave it to her

   C. Mother cared much about her daughter in careful words

   D. Mother wrote to her daughter in careful words

(   ) 3. The word "gulf" in the passage means         .

   A. deep understanding between the old and the young

   B. different ideas between mother and daughter

   C. free talks between mother and daughter

   D. part of the sea going far in land

(   ) 4. What did Mother do with her daughter's letter asking for forgiveness?

   A. She had never received the letter.

   B. For years, she often talked about the letter.

   C. She didn't forgive her daughter at all in all her life.

   D. She read the letter again and again till she died.

(   ) 5. What's the best title of the passage?

"How are you?" is a nice question. It's a friendly way that people in U. S. A. greet each other. But "How are you?" is also a very unusual question. It's a question that often doesn't need an answer. The person who asks "How are you?" hopes to hear the answer "Fine" even though the speaker isn't fine at all. The reason is that " How are you?" isn't really a question, and "Fine" isn't really an answer. They are simply the ways of saying "Hello" or "Hi".

Sometimes people don't say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks "Do you agree?",the other person might think, "No,I disagree. I think you're wrong. . . ”But it isn't very polite to speak out one's real thoughts so directly,so the person might say " Fm not sure",which is a nicer way to say that you don't agree.

People won't tell the truth when they want to finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says "I've to go now."Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse like "Someone's at the door, "or "Something is burning on the stove."What they say might not be true. They want to hang up simply because they don't want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to tell the truth. The excuse is more polite and it doesn't hurt the other person's feelings.

Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea,or finishing a talk, people don't always say exactly what they are thinking. It's an important way to get along well with each other, and it's part of the game of a language.

(   ) 1. When a person in America asks "How are you?", he or she wants to hear

   A. How are you   B. Hello   C. I don't know   D. Fine

(   ) 2. When a person disagrees with someone,it is polite to say "      ."

   A. You are wrong   B. I'm not sure

   C. I'm sure I disagree   D. No,I disagree

(   ) 3. A polite way to finish a talk is to say "      ."

   A. You have to go now   B. I want to hang up

   C. I have to go now   D. I don't want to talk any more

(   ) 4. When a person say "I've to go now. Someone's at the door.",the person may be

   A. giving an excuse   B. hurting someone's feeling

     C. ill   D. asking you a question

(   ) 5. The rule of the game of a language is probably "          .”

   A. Always say what you mean

   B. Don't disagree with people

   C. Never say exactly what you're thinking

   D. Be polite
