    An excerpt (节选) from The Card

    Edward Henry Machin first saw daylight on the 27th of May, 1867, in Brougham Street in Bursley, the oldest of the Five Towns. Brougham Street goes down a hill to the canal (运河).The rent (租金) for one of these houses was not high — only about twenty-two pence (便士) a week.

    Edward Henry’s mother (his father was dead) lived by making and washing clothes for fine ladies. She did not often laugh. She was a woman of few words, and saved time every day by calling her son Denry, instead of Edward Henry.

    Denry did not work hard at school, and boys who were lazy and not very clever usually just found jobs in the potbanks. Luckily, at the age of twelve, he won a place at the best school in Bursley. It happened like this. On the second day of the examination, Denry arrived a little early. As he walked around the examination room, he came to the teacher’s desk, where he saw a list of names with marks for the first day of the examination. The highest possible mark was 30, but next to his name he saw the number 7. The numbers were written in pencil, and the pencil was on the desk. He picked it up, looked around the empty room, and at the door, and them wrote a 2 in front of the 7. Of course, this was not honest, but how many truly honest schoolboys are there? Denry was no worse than most of them.

    One day we heard that a wolf was killed. The other wolf was hurt and ran away. We were worried about Ralph. That night, Ralph returned with a wound*. Becky held his head kindly and comforted him. We hoped he could come through. However, he died.

    Becky cried. I noticed something strange in the bush—two little yellow eyes! Ralph’s child! Before he died, Ralph brought his child to us! He knew he would be safe here, as he had been. Ralph, Ralph, I was moved.

    Millvina Dean, Titanic’s last survivor, died on May 31, 2009 in Southampton. She was 97 and had been in poor health for several weeks.

    The youngest of the ship’s 705 survivors, Ms. Dean was only 9 weeks old when the Titanic hit an iceberg (冰山) on the night of April 14, 1912.     Ms. Dean never married and spent her working life in Southampton. For many years after the sinking, she never spoke of it to people she met or worked with, partly because she remembered nothing about it and partly because she did not want to be seen as drawing attention to herself.

    But that changed after Sep. 1, 1985 when the wreck (残骸) of the Titanic was discovered. That set off a wave of interest in the ship, especially after the movie Titanic. “They found the wreck and after they found the wreck, they found me,” she said.

    In the last 20 years of her life, she went to gatherings in the USA, Canada and a number of European countries to take part in events related to the sinking. She said she had learned from her mother about what happened during the sinking.

    Ms. Dean had never seen Titanic. She explained she was unwilling to be reminded of what had happened to her father.
