    British band “Duran Duran” is going to be the first pop group to perform online concerts on the online game Second Life.

    Second Life is an online 3-dimensional, digital world, which is imagined, created and owned by the players—people all over the world.
    It is thought that 370,000 computer game players worldwide have Second Life characters that exist in the Second Life world, on the Internet.
    Earlier this year, BBC Radio held music festivals and played an interview from inside the game.
    In May of 2006, it held a music festival in Scotland, but also created a festival inside the Second Life game so that people all over the world could take part in their computers.
    One of the members of the band, Nick Rhodes, told the BBC News website: “When I first saw Second Life a few months ago, I couldn’t believe my eyes. When I started looking at the people on screen, talking, walking around and doing normal things, I thought this is somewhere between a strange TV show, a strange experience and a video game. I wanted “Duran Duran” to be part of it.” Each band member has a 3-dimensional person and it is hoped they will do their first online concert soon. The audience will be able to join in and react (反应) while the band is on stage.
    Rhodes said new technologies like Second Life will become more and more important in the music industry in the future.

    It was a cold day, but the students from Prosser Middle School in Chicago were sorting through the waste when they found that their school produces 1,500 pounds every day.
    Prosser is just one school that throws out nearly 4,000 meal trays every day. Counting all of Chicago’s public schools, the number comes to nearly a quarter of a million a day. That’s more than 1 million a week and about 5 million a month. 
    “None of the trays are being recycled,” said a teacher. “ Everyone agrees that it’s very bad.”
    Luckily, concerns about the environment and health have made some US cities take action. Dozens of schools have begun programs to reduce the use of food trays in school.
    These schools have also banned (禁止)some fast food, including McDonald’s. Instead, they offer students recyclable trays. They encourage students to sort out lunchroom waste, then wash and recycle milk cartons and trays . So far, the program has helped schools to save a total of 820,000 trays each week.
    Jay Stream Middle School in Illinois teaches its students how to collect trays. The school has cut its lunchroom waste by two thirds now that students recycle their used trays instead of breaking them.
    Prosser Middle School also sees the benefits of the program. Students have organized about 20 clubs and volunteer activities to cut down on cafeteria garbage. They now recycle 80 percent of the school waste. “ I joined the club,” said Erika Santana, a 16-year-old junior in Prosser, “because I want to make Earth a better place.”

    Last August, Joe and Mary Mahoney began looking at colleges for their 17-year-old daughter, Maureen.     London police are well known in the world. Today there are policemen everywhere, but in 1700 there was no policeman in London at all. A few old men used to protect the city streets at night, and they were not paid very much.
    About 300 years ago, London started to get bigger. The city was very dirty and many people were poor. There were so many thieves who stole money in the streets that people had to stay in their homes as much as possible.
    In 1750, Henry Fielding started to pay a group of people to stop thieves. They were like policemen and were called “Bow Street Runners” because they worked near Bow Street.
