During my second year of nursing school, our teacher gave us an exam. I was a hardworking student and I did well in all the subjects. I finished the questions successfully until I read the last one: ¡°What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?¡±
Of course this was a joke. I saw the cleaning woman every day. She is short and about 60 years old. She has dark hair. But how would I know her name? I had never talked with her before. In fact, I¡¯d never even thought about talking to her. I stared at my paper and started to feel rather guilty. Finally, I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank.
Before the class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our grade.
¡°Certainly,¡± the teacher said. ¡°In your life, you will meet many people. All are important. They deserve(ÖµµÃ) your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say hello.¡±
I¡¯ve never forgotten that lesson. Everyone deserves my attention and I should get to know all of the people who work and live around me. That was, perhaps, the most important lesson of my life. I also learned the cleaning woman¡¯s name was Dorothy.

When I was ten, my sisters and I were amazed at our neighbor¡¯s Christmas tree. We returned home from their house and decided that we must have one of our own. In our house we never had enough money for a Christmas tree.
In fact, we insisted so much that my father had no choice but to agree. ¡°Yes!¡± he finally said.¡°This year we will have a Christmas tree.¡± Our mouths dropped open at the thought of having our own tree. Then Dad said,¡°I¡¯ll do it myself.¡±
We followed him around the house as he gathered up the materials he would need, We all sat close to him, carefully watching everything he did. He passed the thread around the first nail on the corner of a box, then back down to the second nail on the box, and up again to the nail, until right there before our eyes a green Christmas tree began to take shape. He carefully did the same with all of the 50 nails in the box and when he had finished, he said,¡°Now you can decorate it.¡±
I don¡¯t remember where the decorations came from, but they were red and small and to us they just looked so beautiful and perfect for our tree. When we finished decorating it, we proudly invited all our friends over to see our Christmas tree. We were so happy, not only because it looked so pretty, but because my father had made it himself. It truly was the most beautiful Christmas tree we had ever seen.
Years later, things got better and Dad was able to buy a proper Christmas tree which we would happily decorate. However, my sisters and I will never forget the night when we got our first Christmas tree.

We always celebrated Dad¡¯s birthday on Thanksgiving Day, even after he entered a nursing home. When we knew it might be his last birthday, the whole family decided to get together for a huge birthday celebration at the nursing home.
Dad was a good storyteller and we were always his listeners. During a quiet moment, I announced it was now Dad¡¯s turn to listen to stories for a change. I wanted everyone to tell Dad what we loved about him. The room became quiet. Then one after another, people told stories from their hearts, while Dad listened with tears in eyes.
Everyone seemed to have more than one story. Even the little grandchildren couldn¡¯t wait to tell Dad why they loved him. For a man who had been kind to so many hundreds of people in his life, here was our chance to tell him how much we love him. A few months later, at Dad¡¯s memorial service, we more fully realized what we had given to Dad that night. Those are the stories people normally tell at a funeral (ÔáÀñ) after a loved one is no longer alive to hear the words. They tell stories, full of tears. But we had given those memories to Dad in his life, and we had told them through laughter, together with hugs and joy. He had them to hold and enjoyed them from time to time in his mind during his last days and months.
Words do matter, and they are enough. We just need to say them or to speak them publicly the ones we love. That¡¯s the ways to give back love and that¡¯s our chance to celebrate a person in his or her life.

Making a public speech is the thing that most people don¡¯t want to do. The reason is that we are all afraid of making mistakes in front of others. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we will be. But forget it now. Public speaking is easy. It¡¯s just a simple talking, Although I¡¯m a shy man, I¡¯ve been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years. Anybody who can talk can speak in public. Here are some of the lessons I have learned:
Keep your speech simple. Your audience can¡¯t take all of your main ideas, and they can only remember one or two of them, not ten or twenty. So you should prepare one or two of your main ideas very well. But if you can¡¯t express what you want to say, then your speech will not be paid attention to. And if you don¡¯t have a clear idea of what you want to say, your audience won¡¯t, either.
Organize your speech well. No matter how long or short your speech is, you have to organize your speech¡ªhow you are going to open or begin, what main points you want to make and how you¡¯re going to close or end. A strong close is usually very important and critical(¹Ø¼üµÄ): the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember. If not, they will be confused.
Keep your speech not long. The standard (±ê×¼µÄ) length of a speech is usually 12 minutes. Most people can¡¯t put their minds in one thing for too long time, which will make them tired and lose their interest. If you pay no attention to your audience¡¯s reaction(·´Ó¦)£¬the audience will get bored. Of course, your speech will fail.
Following these suggestions above, you can make a good speech in public, and you will be an excellent speaker, I think.

Did you know that 11,000 people die every day from smoking? Did you know that people die every day from breathing smoke        other people¡¯s cigarettes?
Tobacco smoke has 43 ingredients that may        cancer. If smokers had learned these
when they were young, they probably would never have started smoking.
Most smokers try        first cigarette when they are teenagers. Often, they start smoking because they think that it makes them look more        . Sometimes they start smoking because their friends tell them that it¡¯s cool. If teenagers are told that half of them will die before the age of 65 from smoking cigarettes, how can they still think it¡¯s cool to smoke?
One of the biggest problems is cigarette advertisements. Tobacco companies        tell the truth to teenagers about cigarettes. After watching the advertisements on TV or looking at the posters in which people ride horses or play in a rock band, young people often think that smoking      be cool.
Sadly, cigarettes are very difficult to        once a person has started smoking. Most teenagers start smoking         they are influenced by friends or cigarettes advertisements. And often, the teenagers regret the decision to start smoking later in life.
Teenagers need to know        bad cigarettes are for their health. If they are told that cigarettes kill more people than guns do, they probably will never start smoking.

I'm the type of guy who believes you can achieve anything you set your mind to, if you give it your all and don't give up.       , when I decided to write a novel, it didn't matter to me that I had never done anything like that before. What did matter to me was that I had a great story in my head, a story that needed to be     .
What I thought would take a couple of months or a couple of years. After five months of writing, I at last       the "finish line" - that magical day when you type "THE END". Okay, so I wrote a manuscript£¨Êָ壩.The first thing I did was to copy it, followed by sending it out to all of my friends who     a lot, to get creative criticism£¨ÅúÆÀ£©£®And then it was back to rewriting the story. Next, I hired a professional£¨×¨ÒµÈËÔ±£©£¬who gave me great      £¬which meant more rewriting. I soon learned a lesson in writing - writing is rewriting. There would always be      for improvement.
I had rewritten the manuscript time and time again for two years, and in the process, I learned      to write. Looking back, I had no idea how long it was going to take or how hard it was going to be. Writing the manuscript was the easy part, while going on the way to write a        book was the hard part.

You may hear about earthquakes, but do you know what to do before, during and after an earthquake? Here is some advice for you:
Before an earthquake   It is necessary to prepare yourself and your family. All family members should know how to turn off gas, water and electricity and know useful telephone numbers ( doctor, hospital, police and 119 etc.). Never put heavy things over beds.
During an earthquake   It is important for each of you to stay calm. If you are indoors, quickly move to a safe place in the room such as under a strong desk or table. The purpose is to protect yourself from falling things. Stay away from windows, large mirrors, heavy fumiture and so on. If you are cooking, turn off the gas. If you are outdoors, move to an open area like a playground. Move away from buildings, bridges and trees. If you are driving, stop the car as soon as possible, staying away from bridges and tall buildings, stay in your car.
After an earthquake  ONCE the shaking has stopped, DO NOT run out of the building at once. It is better to wait and leave when it is safe. Check around you and help the people who are in trouble. If your building is badly broken, you should leave it. If you smell or hear gas, get everyone outside and open windows and doors. If you can do it safely, turn off the gas. Report it to the gas company.
СÌâ1:Which of the following is mentioned in the second paragraph?
A£®People should know how to turn on gas.
B£®People should know how to save water.
