Passage 4

“Life is speeding up(加速). Everyone is getting unwell. ”

This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown person who lived in ancient Rome wrote it.

We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can change our lives. 1

For example, you're rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings. 2Suddenly the computer goes bad and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How calm and happy do you feel?

Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave us feeling worried and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity often seem to be happier?3

One family in the UK went"back in time" to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10 and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave(微波炉),computer or mobile phones.

The grandmother Lyn said, “4” The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Also Lyn changed from being a fashionable (时尚的), beer-drinking granny, to one who cooked things.

A. Perhaps it's because they live simpler lives.

B. Living in a different time will be lots of fun for us.

C. A QQ message from your friend appears on the screen.

D. But have all these developments really improved our lives?

E. The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.

F. We have achieved so much with the developments of technology.

1D

2C

3A

4E

For example, you're rushing to finish your homework …Now you have to stay up all night to get it done.”可知高科技的发明也会给生活带来不便,所以“But have all these developments really improved our lives?”"但所有这些发展真的改善了我们的生活吗?”符合上下文语境,故选D

2根据“you're rushing to finish your homework on the computer. ”你急着在电脑上完成作业,可知“A QQ message from your friend appears on the screen. ”“你朋友的QQ信息出现在屏幕上。”符合语境,故选C

3根据上文用why提问:Why do you think… seem to be happier?可知应用because回答,所以“Perhaps it's because they live simpler lives. ”“也许是因为他们过着更简单的生活。”符合语境,故选A

4根据上文“They had no washing machine, microwave(微波炉),computer or mobile phones. ”“他们没有洗衣机、微波炉、电脑或手机。”可知奶奶Lyn可能会说“ The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes. ”“你拥有的东西越多,生活就越困难。”符合语境,故选E

做这类题的时候要边读边做,圈画一些粗线索,再从选项中寻找相关的特征词用来判断正确答案。带入排除法也是一种很好的方法。另外,如果发现有一题拿不准的,先跳过,先做容易的能做出的题,真到读完整篇文章,至此,文章的要点和主旨、各个段落之间的逻辑关系应该基本就能清楚了,然后再做之前不确定的题目。

【题目】 China covers large areas and has a great population. Different living habits have always been an interesting topic in the country. Recently, another difference between southern Chinese and northern Chinese became a hot one: The way people shop at markets.

People from southern China say that they always buy what they need for just one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy half of a Chinese cabbage, two potatoes and 0.25 kilograms of beef at a time.

However, one may be laughed at if he does this in the north. Instead, buying vegetables and meat enough for a week is usual.

Also, you can buy a small amount(数量) of fruit, such as a single apple or pear, each time in the south. Shopkeepers even help you peel( ) and cut them. But shopkeepers in the north hardly offer such service. And many fruits are sold in baskets and boxes. The difference could be due to the different weather.

Food can be kept for a long time in the north, as it is usually cold and dry there. Many northern Chinese have the habit of keeping food, especially for the long winter. But the hot and wet weather in the south makes southern Chinese buy just enough food for one meal or one day, or else the food may go bad.

1In southern China, at a time people usually buy .

A.a small amount of foodB.a large amount of food

A.They’ll well laugh at you.

B.They’ll only sell them in boxes and baskets.

D.They’ll only sell a single apple or pear.

3What does the underlined phrase “due to” mean in Chinese?

A.因为B.所以C.然而D.但是

4Why do many northern Chinese have the habit of keeping food?

“Which is the right bin for my rubbish?” This may be the most asked question in Shanghai since it started a new garbage-sorting (垃圾分类) program on July 1, 2019 When learning about the four kinds of rubbish-wet, dry, recyclable (可回收的) and harmful-many people maybe don' know how to properly sort it.

To help people solve this problem, China's technology companies are giving a hand. For example, if you want to know which bin your wet wipes (湿巾) should go in, you can just open a mini app in WeChat or Alipay and look for “wet wipes”. The app will give you the answer right away. Soon, you might do it in an easier way. Maybe you can just take a photo of the rubbish and then be told where it should go.

This kind of technology is called image recognition It uses artificial intelligence (AI, 人工智能). Many companies around the world are making garbage-sorting robots that use this technology. For example, AMP Robotics in the US has made a robot that can sort food and drink packages (包装).By “seeing” pictures on the packages, the robot will pick up the rubbish and put it in the right place.

The future of garbage-sorting looks good. But it's not the best way. The best thing we can do is to make less rubbish in the first place.

1The people in Shanghai must put the rubbish into the right bin since July 1, 2019.

2People know how to sort the five kinds of rubbish.

3WeChat can help people sort the rubbish correctly.

4According to paragraph 3, garbage-sorting robots can only “seeing”pictures on the packages.

5Making less rubbish is the best thing we can do in the first place.
