        New Year's Day is the time for people to say goodbye to the past and celebrate a new start. People in most countries celebrate this special day on Jan. 1st of the Gregorian calendar (公历) .And they celebrate it in many different ways.

        In the US,every year as the clock nears midnight on Dec. 31st,people in Times Square,New York,watch the famous New Year's Eve Ball go down from the top of the flagpole (旗杆) .          However,in China,New Year's Day is not a very big moment compared to the Spring Festival,yet people still do something special. As everyone has a one-day holiday,some people may take a short trip with their family. At school,most classes hold parties before New Year's Day. It is a happy time for children who perform shows.
