Do you know that each child in school catches six to ten colds every year? Though there is no cure for colds, there are some suggestions for you to avoid getting a cold.
First, you can avoid catching a cold by practicing healthy habits. Begin by eating healthy foods. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables and drink milk and juice. Other healthy habits include getting plenty of sleep at night and lots of exercise.
Next, you should try to avoid contact with the viruses that cause colds. If you can, stay away from large crowds. When people cough(咳嗽) and sneeze(打喷嚏), the cold virus goes into the air. Do not share a drinking cup, fork, or spoon with someone else because that could spread the virus. Washing you hands is also a good way not to catch a cold. The cold virus may be on the things like telephones and money. Shaking another person’s hand could even spread the virus. By washing your hands, you can stop the virus from infecting(传染).

How could we tell time if there were no watches or clocks anywhere in the world?
The sun is probably the world’s first “clock”, except in the far north, where the Eskimos(爱斯基摩人) live. There, it’s dark most of the winter, and light most of the summer. But in most of the world, people have used the sun as a clock. Even today, if you don’t have a clock, you can still know that when the sun shines, it’s day and when it’s dark, it’s night. The sun can also tell you if it’s morning, noon, or afternoon.
Some people live near the sea from the tides. In the daytime, for about six hours, water rises higher and higher on the beach. And then it goes down and down for about six hours. The same thing happens again at night. There are two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours. Seamen on the ship learn how to tell time by looking at the moon and the stars. The whole sky is their clock.
In some places in the world the wind comes up at about the same time every day or changes direction or stops blowing. In these places the wind can be the clock.
A sand clock is an even better clock. If you had fine dry sand in a glass shaped like the one in the picture, you would have what is called an hourglass. The sand in the hourglass goes from the top part to the bottom in exactly one hour. When the hourglass is turned over, the sand will take another hour to go back again

Rivers are one of our most important natural resources (资源). Many of the world's great cities are located(坐落) on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river running through it that plays an important role in the lives of its people.
Since the beginning of the history, people have used rivers for transportation(运输). The longest one in the United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is the Nile. To the people of India, the Gangs is great, but it is also important for transportation; Ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in southeast Asia. The greatest of all for navigation (航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food, water to drink, water for crops(庄稼), and chances for fun and entertainment for the people who live along their banks. In order to increase(增加) the supply of crops, engineers sometimes build a dam (大坝) across a river and let a lake from behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to irrigate (灌溉) their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries.
However, large cities and industries that are located upon rivers often make problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with chemicals(化学物质) and other materials. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits (利益) of this natural resource.

B.people's swimming in the river too much
C.chemicals and other materials
D.people's building a dam across a river
小题4:The best title of the passage is ___________.
A.Rivers in Cities B.The importance of Rivers
C.TransportationD.Natural Resources

Would you like to have an electric car? We will see this kind of cars soon in America. These quiet, clean cars run on electricity. Carmakers will start selling electric cars in 2011.
The world’s population will jump from 6.8 billion to 9 billion by 2050. The need for cars will jump with it. But the oil(石油) won’t keep up with the number of cars on the road. So the price of oil will go up.
Electric cars aren’t perfect just yet. It can take eight hours to charge(充电) a car for only 100 miles of driving. And the distance(路程) that cars can go depends on driving conditions(条件). How far it travels depends on the weather and traffic.
Price is a problem, too. Electric models cost much more than oil-powered cars. The good news is that electric-car technology is getting better. As it does, the prices of this kind of cars are dropping.
To charge the car, the US Department of Energy is paying for at least 10,000 charging stations around the country. Private businesses are also getting ready for it. It will cost about $3 for each charge.
Carmakers are coming up with other ways to make the car cleaner and cheaper. Cars may run on clean diesel(柴油). So who knows what will power the car you may be driving in 10 years? The chances are that it will be something that’s clean and easy.

About 2,500 scientists met in Prague(布拉格,捷克首都). At first, some of them said that there would be 12 planets in our solar system. In the end, the scientists said that only Mercury(水), Venus(金), Earth, Mars(火), Jupiter(木), Saturn(土), Uranus(天王)and Neptune(海王)are the planets in the solar system. ②Each of these planets has its own orbit, and of the planets is big enough to be a planet. Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to connect the brain with computers. Braincomputer interface(BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.
Recently, two scientists, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytehnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, show a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts.
In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.
“Our brain has billions of body cells(细胞). These send signals through the spinal cord(脊髓) to the body part to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries(脊柱受伤) or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the body part.” Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with outer world and also to control machines.”
The scientists designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp(头皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer finds meanings of the signals and commands the wheelchair with an engine. The wheelchair also has two cameras that tell objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.
Prof. Millan , the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that finds meanings of brain signals and turns them into simple commands.” The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two kinds: communication, and controlling objects. One example is this wheelchair.”
He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can get advantages from. And the other is sure that they can use the technology for long.

小题3:The team will test with real patients to_________.
A.make money from them
B.prove the technology useful to them
C.make them live longer
D.learn about their physical condition
小题4:Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Switzerland, the BCI research Center
