It’s about Time

Do you know what time it is? If you do, you probably are looking at a clock or Long ago, people didn’t have clocks or watches like you do. When the sun rose, they got up and when the sun went down, they went to bed. They told timeby the position of the sun in the sky.

People discovered that they could use a stick and the sun to tell time. This was called a shadow clock. They put a stick in the ground, pointing straight up. The direction of the stick’s shadow and how long or shortit was told them the time.

A better kind of shadow clock was called a sundial. Sundial had a pointer and a base. The pointer cast a shadow on marks around the base. People could tell time by reading the marks.

But shadow clocks were not good for telling time on cloudy days or at night.

One kind of clock that didn’t need the sun was a water clock. A water clock was container with a tiny hole in the bottom. Water would steadilydropout of the hole. Marks on the inside of the container showed the time. It took one hour for the water to go down one mark.

Another kind of clock that didn’t need the sun was a candle clock. You would know the time by how much of the candle had melted(熔化). The candle had marks down its side to show the hours.

Sometimes people used candle clocks as alarm clocks. They put a nail(钉子)in the candle at the time they wanted to wake up, hanging a shoe on the nail. When the candle melted down, the nail fell outand the shoe hit the floor with a BANG! Now there are all kinds of timepieces, from tall grandfather clocks to watches we wear on our wrists(手腕). Most clocks run on electricity from batteries.

There are many more types of clocks, too. Clocks hang in and on buildings. Clocks are everywhere!

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen in almost a month. The crops were dying. If we didn’t see some rain soon, we would lose everything.

I was in the kitchen that day when I saw my son, Billy, walking toward the . Trying to be as still as possible, he was obviously walking with great . Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house. Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that way toward the woods. I couldn’t take it any longer and I him.

He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very not to spill (溢出) the water he carried.

As I came closer, I saw the most surprising sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked right up to them. But the deer did not hurt him nor move as Billy knelt down. And then I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously thirsty, lift its head to lap up the water in my boy’s hands. When the water was gone, Billy jumped up to run back to the house. I followed him back to a spigot (水龙头). Billy opened it and let the drip slowly up his “cup”.

When he stood up and began to turn back, I was there in front of him. His little eyes were filled with tears. “I’m not ,” was all he said. The week before, he had made the same trouble with our horses, which caused him a lecture from his father about the importance of not wasting water.

This time, I him, with a small pot of water from the kitchen. I let him take care of the baby deer alone for it was his job. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops… more drops… and more. I looked up at the sky. All I can say is that the rain that came that day saved our farm, just like the actions of one little boy saved another.

Learning vocabulary doesn’t have to be boring

Many students have problems with vocabulary when preparing for tests like the SATs. Last week, TEENS offered advice on how to memorize new words. If you’re now familiar with those methods, why not try moving on to the next stage by using the following tips to build up your English vocabulary.

Repeated encounters (反复遇见)

The usual way of “memorizing” new material is through repeating it while it’s still in your mind. However, simply repeating a word seems to have little long-term effect.

But one kind of repetition is effective: repetition of encounters with a word. Words stand a good chance of being remembered if they’ve been met at least seven times in your reading, at intervals (相隔一段时间). So, read English magazines, newspapers, and websites regularly.

Spacing and review

It’s better to distribute (分配) memory work over a period of time rather than do it in a single session (一段时间). This is known as the “principle of distributed practice”, where new vocabulary introduced in one lesson is reviewed in the next, and then in later lessons.

Use it or lose it

Putting words to use in interesting ways helps add them to your long-term memory. In a study of vocabulary learning, students who made up their own sentences with new words and read them aloud remembered them better than those who learned the words separately and silently. Best of all, students were given the task of silently imagining a picture in their minds to go with a new word. So it might help if learners link words with a mental image.

Mix it up

Let’s face it — learning words can be really boring, but it doesn’t have to be. Thanks to the Internet, there are more interesting ways to get the job done. Try watching videos from English-speaking social media celebrities and copying the way they speak. You could even upload your own videos and try becoming a star yourself.

1According to the passage, a good way of memorizing new words is ________.

A. simply repeating them

B. learning the words silently

C. reviewing them in one lesson

D. reading English magazines regularly

2To make learning words more interesting, we can ________.

A. try to become a famous star

B. read new words on websites

C. make and upload our own English videos

D. draw a picture on the paper with a new word

3What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. Where to use new words. B. How to memorize new words.

C. When to learn new words. D. What to write with new words.

In Britain, people often invite friends for a meal, a party or just coffee. People who know each other very well close1, family or neighbors visit each other’s houses without an invitation (邀请), but usually an invitation is needed.2people invite someone to their homes, they often say: “Would you like3for dinner on Saturday?” Answers are: “Thanks. We’d love to. What time?” or “I’m sorry. We’d love to but we have tickets4the concert.” However,5is not polite to say “No, we wouldn’t!”

Sometimes, the British use expressions (表达) that sound like invitations but which are not invitations. For example: “You must come over for6drink sometime.” or “Let’s go out for a meal one of these days.” These are usually just polite7of ending a talk. They are not real invitations8they don’t mention an exact time or day. They just show that the person is9

to be friendly and the answers are: “Yes, that would be nice.” or “OK, yes, thanks.”

So next time you hear what sounds like an invitation, listen10. Is it a real invitation or is the person just being friendly?
