【题目】 “What’s the name of the supermarket? I can’t remember right now.” Have you ever heard your grandparents ask questions like this sometimes? Usually, we think that older people’s memory becomes had because their brains get weak. But now a team of scientists at the University of Tubingen in Germany has a new idea. “The human brain works slower in old age,” says Michael Ramscar, the team’s lead scientist, “only because it has stored more information over time.” The findings are based on a series of computer tests related to learning and memory.
Scientists had the computers read a certain amount of words and learn new things each day. When the computer “read” a small amount of data(数据),its performance on cognitive(认知)tests was similar to that of a young adult . But if the computer took in larger amounts of data, its performance was similar to that of an older adult. Often it was slower, but not because its processing ability had dropped. Rather, increased “experience” had caused the computer’s database to grow, giving it more data to process-which takes more time. This is similar to how old people process information.
Imagine that one person knows just two people’s birthdays and can get them right each time he or she is asked. Another person knows the birthdays of 2,000 people , but can only match the right person to the right birthday 9 times out of 10. Can you say the first person has a better memory than the second person?
“The larger the library you have in your head , the longer it usually takes to find a particular word,” Benedict Carey, a science reporter for The New York Times, wrote in an article about the study.

根据“What’s the name of the supermarket? I can’t remember right now.” 以及Have you ever heard your grandparents ask questions like this sometimes?
The findings are based on a series of computer tests related to learning and memory.
But if the computer took in larger amounts of data, its performance was similar to that of an older adult.
Imagine that one person knows just two people’s birthdays and can get them right each time he or she is asked. Another person knows the birthdays of 2,000 people , but can only match the right person to the right birthday 9 times out of 10. Can you say the first person has a better memory than the second person?

As an English person, I can speak three languages English, German and French, so do you think the British people are very good language learners? The fact is that they aren't.
Some statistics (数据) from the survey done by the European Commission (欧盟委员会) showed that 62% of the British people only speak English. 38% speak at least one foreign language and 18% speak two or more Compared with the British people, 56% of the people in other European countries speak at least one foreign language and 28% speak two or more. From this you can see that the British people are famous for not speaking foreign languages and that they are not good language learners in Europe.
And the survey also showed that English is the most widely-spoken foreign language. Many European people can have a conversation in English. That's why many people don't think it is necessary to learn a foreign language.
In Britain, students aren't required to learn a foreign language. That means learning a foreign language is only a choice at school. In British schools it's common for children to start learning a foreign language at 11 and many of them give it up at 14. So why don't students continue learning foreign languages at school? Because they think it's more difficult to get good marks in languages than in other subjects such as science or history.
To solve this situation, the British government is looking for different ways to improve language learning at school. One way is to start learning it at a much younger age. Another one is to give school children more choices.
【1】What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A.The people in England are good at learning languages.
B.Most of British people only speak English.
C.British people are known for speaking foreign languages.
D.Most of British people want to learn more than one language.
【2】How many ways will the British government use to improve language learning?
A.One.B.Two.C.Three.D.Four.
【3】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.People in other European countries speak English as much as British people.
B.One British student can't give up learning a foreign language until 14.
C.Students in Britain prefer to learn science or history rather than learn a foreign language.
D.It's unusual for British students not to learn a foreign language.

Air pollution is a big problem for cities. Many people are dying from it. But how can we tell the air quality(质量) is good or bad?
Joris Lam has invented a birdhouse that can tell us about the air quality. On a tree next to a canal (运河) in Amsterdam, a small birdhouse will shine bright green when the air is clean. If you are standing near the birdhouse, it will also give you a free Wi-Fi connection. So Joris’s birdhouse is called TreeWifi. It can be put on a tree around your house to test the air quality. People can see a screen with information about local air quality and how to improve it. TreeWifi is a simple way for people to know about the air pollution around them. If the birdhouse doesn't shine, people will care more about the environment. It tells them to change their lifestyles. For example, to protect the air, they can ride bikes instead of driving cars.
Joris and his team are trying to make some changes to the birdhouse. In the future, the heat of its green light will be used to keep birds warm in winter.
