【题目】 When 4-year-old British Prince George started his first day of school in September, 2017, Chinese language was in his course.
And he wasn’t alone. According to a report published by the British Council in September, about 51 percent of UK parents want their children to learn Chinese, as it’s believed to be one of the most useful languages to know.
In fact, the popularity of Chinese drove the UK government to launch the Mandarin Excellence Program in September last year. Its aim is to make at least 5,000 British state secondary school students speak Chinese very well by 2020.
The language has become the second most spoken foreign language in the US, after only Spanish (西班牙), according to a survey by 24/7 Wall St, a US financial news website.
Many US famous persons such as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Malia Obama, US President Barack Obama’s daughter, study Chinese as a second language.
So far, 67 countries have included Chinese in their national course, so why are so many countries interested in learning Chinese?
One reason could be that as China continues to develop quickly, Chinese is increasingly becoming a useful tool for people’s personal and professional growth. “I think everyone believes that China will be the next great superpower…even if it’s not a superpower like America. It’s still significant,” said Aisling McCaffrey from Canada, who studied at the Renmin University of China. “Learning Chinese is the best way to make sure that you can be part of that growth.”
This opinion was shared by British Prime Minister David Cameron, who encouraged British students to learn Chinese to “seal tomorrow’s business deals” in 2013.

On March 14 this year, one of science’s brightest stars went dark. Stephen Hawking, the word-famous British scientist, died at 76 in Cambridge, UK.
Hawking is considered by many to be the greatest scientist in history since Albert Einstein. He came up with the theory that the universe (宇宙) began with the Big Bang and will end in black holes. But this didn’t stop him from living a meaningful and colorful life. “If one is physically disabled, one cannot afford to be mentally disabled as well, ” he once said.
Hawking travelled the earth to attend science meetings, visiting every continent (大洲), including Antarctica (南极洲). 【题目】 Everyone needs friends. There is an old saying, “Friends are God's way of taking care of us.” But how do you find real friendship and keep it?
First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient. For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints(抱怨)and do his or her best to help you. To make a friend, you can't be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your life.
But things cannot always be happy. Even the best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to him or her. When there is no one around, talk to him or her honestly. If he or she doesn't want to talk, you can write a letter.

【题目】 It can't be true that when in Rome, do as the Romans do. So it's necessary for you to know what you can talk about with the local people in other countries.
In France
You'll find that conversations often turn into heated discussions. You'd better give opinions only on subjects that you are knowledgeable about. There is seldom a moment of silence, except when the topic under discussion has been finished, and nothing new has been introduced.
Food, art, music and current events or history are welcome topics. The French believe in freedom, and you can criticize(批评)anyone, but not Napoleon, who stands for the French spirit. Moreover, never use the conversation opener “What do you do?”
In Australia
Generally speaking, the Australians are excited about discussions. Many topics may be open to discussion, including religion and politics. The best way, however, is to wait for Australians to bring up these two subjects; be prepared to listen to what they are talking about. The Australians like to criticize themselves, but they can't stand being criticized by others. Don't talk big. The Australians prefer to judge (判断) your abilities through your actions. People who show off their education in conversation may be laughed at.

【1】In Australia, people can be criticized by others.
