What do you think is the most important invention? The TV? The printing? The telephone? Or the computer? A report show that they are not the only important invention. Here are three other important inventions.
One of the simplest inventions is the toilet(²ÞËù). Before toilets, waste ran into rivers from people¡¯s houses. Illness were common in big cities, and it was often difficult to find clean drinking water.
Animal food is another important invention. Before the invention, most animals were killed every autumn because there was not enough food for them in winter. After hay£¨¸É²Ý£© became a kind of common animal food, animals could live through the long winter.
The third great invention is glasses. Glasses help people read, write and do ¡°close work¡± after the age of 45. Without glasses, the world would be difficult for the people above 45.

When you are learning English, you find it not clever to put an English sentence, word for word, into your own language. Take the sentence ¡°How do you do?¡± as an example. If you look up each word in the dictionary, one at a time, what is your translation(·Òë)£¿It must be a wrong sentence in your own language. Languages do not just have different sounds, they are different in many ways. It¡¯s important to master(ÕÆÎÕ) the rules for word order(˳Ðò) in the study of English, too. If the speakers put words in a wrong order, the listener can¡¯t understand the speaker¡¯s sentence easily. Sometimes when the order of words in an English sentence is changed, the meaning of the sentence changes, But sometimes the order is changed, the meaning of the sentence doesn¡¯t change. Let¡¯s see the difference between the two pairs of sentences.
¡°She ony like apples.¡± ¡°Only she likes apples.¡±
¡°My friend is Alice.¡± ¡°Alice is my friend.¡±
When you are learning English, you must do your best to get the spirit(¾«ÉñʵÖÊ) of the language and use it as the English speaker does.

Do you know what a resolution is? It¡¯ a kind of promise. Most of the time, we make promises to other people. (¡°Mom, I promise I¡¯m going to tidy my room when I get back from school.¡±) However, promises you make to yourself are 1. (resolution), and the 2. (common) kind is New Year¡¯s resolutions. The start of the year is often a time for making resolutions. When we make resolutions at the 3. (begin) of the year, we hope that we are going to improve our 4. (life). Some people write down 5. (they) resolutions and plans for the coming year. This helps them to remember their resolutions. 6. (other) tell their family and friends about their wishes and plans.
There are different kinds of resolutions. Some are about physical health. For example, some people promise themselves they are going 7. (start) an exercise program or eat less fast food. Many resolutions have to do with self-improvement. These are about 8. (make) yourself a better person. Some people might say they are going to take up a hobby like painting or taking photos, or 9. (learn) to play the guitar. Some resolutions have to do with better planning, like making a weekly plan for schoolwork. For example, a student may have to find more time to study.
Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in common. People hardly ever keep them! There are good reasons for this. Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult 10. (keep). Sometimes people just forget about them. For this reason, some people say the best resolution is to have no resolutions! How about you¡ªwill you make any next year?
