What's your idea of a perfect mom? In America, moms of the 1950s and 60s in the TV
plays were the "perfect" examples. They always made freshly cooked meals and had a tidy
house. It was their full - time job to care for the children and the home. It meant that
the home was the real center of mother's lives. But that was 40-50 years ago. Times have
changed, and so have the roles of moms.

In the U.S., in 1960s, society began to change. The women's liberation movement (妇女
解放运动) caused women to question their traditional and solid roles. And women began
leaving their homes to get jobs or go back to school. Society changed in Asia, too. Fifty
years later, it becomes normal of mothers to work outside the home without the exception
(例外). This is true in both America and Asia.
Mothers today serves as presidents, CEOs, university teachers and airline pilots. In
fact, they can be found in every profession (职业). But most people will tell you, their
most important job is still being a mom.

The Wilsons decided to go overseas for vacation. They had a family meeting(会议) to plan the vacation. “First,” Mr Wilson said, “we should decide where we are going.”

“I don’t agree,” Mrs Wilson said, “I think we should decide when we are going first. We don’t want to go to places when they are cold.” Mr Wilson agreed, so the family’s first decision was when to go on vacation. They decided to go in July.

“Now we can decide where to go,” said Mr Wilson.

“But, Dad,” Ben said, “don’t you think that where we go depends on how we go? If we plan to fly, we can go a long way. If we plan to drive, we can’t go far.”

Again, Mr Wilson agreed, and they discussed this. At last they agreed to travel by plane.

Scientists are trying to make the deserts into good land again. They want to
bring water to the deserts, so people can live and grow food there. They are
learning a lot about the deserts. But more and more of the earth are becoming
deserts all the time. Scientists may not be able to change the deserts in time.
Scientists think that people make deserts. People are doing bad things to the
earth. (1)Some places on the earth do not get very much rain. But they still do
not become deserts. This is because some green plants are growing there. Small
