Best friend

Friends are very important in our life. They always help us when we are in need. Everyone needs friends to talk with and get confidence from.

My best friend is Jenny. She is a quiet girl. She is always friendly and helpful. She is a tall girl with long hair. She does well in all the subjects and gets on well with others at school.

I was weak in maths. One day, I failed in maths exam. I was so sad that I couldn¡¯t help crying. Jenny encouraged me a lot. From then on, she helped me with my maths. With her help, I got an A in the next maths exam. I was really thankful to her. And we became best friends.

I think helping each other is the most important for being friends. Then we will be much better together.

While watching the Olympics the other night, I came across an unbelievable sight. It was not a gold medal, nor a world record broken, but a show of someone¡¯s strong determination to win.
The event was a swimming and started with only three men on the blocks. For one reason or another, two of them made mistake when they started, so they were kicked out. That would have been difficult enough, not having anyone to race against, even though the time on the clock is what¡¯s important.
I watch the man jump into the water and knew right away that something was wrong. Now I¡¯m not an expert swimmer but I do know a good jump from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality. When he was swimming, the crowd started to laugh. Clearly this man was not a medal competitor.
I listened to the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man that was clearly having a hard time. Finally he made his turn to start back. He tried his best, but clearly he was exhausted.
But when they saw the man keeping on trying , they stopped laughing and beginning to cheer. Some even to stand and say: ¡°Come , you can do it!¡± and ¡° Go for it£¡¡±
A few minutes later ,this young man finally finished his race. The crowd went wild. You would have thought that he had won the gold, and he should have. Even though he recorded one of the slowest times in Olympic history, this man gave more heart than any of the other competitors.
Just a short year ago, he had never swam, let alone raced. His country had been asked to Sydney as manners.
In a competition where players remove their silver medals feeling they have somehow been cheated out of gold, or when they act so proudly in front of their competitors, it is nice to watch this game.
A man that gave his all-knowing that he had no chance, but competed because of the spirit of the games.

What do you think of different kinds of reference books(²Î¿¼Êé)? We did a survey. Here¡¯re some of their answers.

Liu Yang: In some ways, reference books(²Î¿¼Êé) are useful. They help us understand textbooks better. For example, if we can¡¯t learn a language point well in English class, a reference book can help us to review the point. So I think it¡¯s better to have such books.

Wang Qian: Reference books have some disadvantages. Some of them show answers to the exercises in textbooks(¿Î±¾). This isn¡¯t very good. Students will just copy the answers instead of thinking for themselves. Day after day, students won¡¯t listen carefully in class.

Zheng Xia: Sometimes, reference books are useful. Some reference books show something a little more difficult than the textbooks. They challenge us and let us reach a higher level in our studies. So if you want to learn more, reference books are needed.

Liu Wei: I don¡¯t think reference books are very helpful. If we listen to our teachers carefully and solve the problems at school, this is helpful enough. Besides, the school has already gives us a lot of homework. More reference books will only make us sick of studying. And for some subjects like English, the best way is to speak, not just to do exercises.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿ The cultures of the east and the west are really different from each other. This is because the culture systems are two separate systems on the whole.

The origin of the eastern cultures is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are started by rivers. In China, the mother river is the Yellow River while the Indian one is the Hindu River. These two cultures were developed for several thousand years and formed their own styles. Then in Tang Dynasty of China, the Chinese culture gradually went overseas to Japan, mixed into the Japanese society and shaped the Japanese culture nowadays. Though a bit different from the Chinese one, it belongs to the same system.

When the two mother rivers gave birth to the eastern culture, another famous culture was brought up on the Mesopotamian Plain¡ªthe Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the culture of the Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. And these two are well-known as the base of the European culture. Like the Chinese culture, the European one also crossed waters. When the colonists£¨Ö³ÃñÕߣ©of England settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn't differ from the European one a lot.

At the same time, the difference of the language system adds to the cultural differences. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic£¨ÏóÐεģ©language while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system, for example, the one I'm using to write this paper.

Other factors£¨ÒòËØ£©like human race difference counts as well. But what's, more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and West, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference from the other.
