【题目】 “What’s the name of the supermarket? I can’t remember right now.” Have you ever heard your grandparents ask questions like this sometimes? Usually, we think that older people’s memory becomes had because their brains get weak. But now a team of scientists at the University of Tubingen in Germany has a new idea. “The human brain works slower in old age,” says Michael Ramscar, the team’s lead scientist, “only because it has stored more information over time.” The findings are based on a series of computer tests related to learning and memory.

Scientists had the computers read a certain amount of words and learn new things each day. When the computer “read” a small amount of data(数据),its performance on cognitive(认知)tests was similar to that of a young adult . But if the computer took in larger amounts of data, its performance was similar to that of an older adult. Often it was slower, but not because its processing ability had dropped. Rather, increased “experience” had caused the computer’s database to grow, giving it more data to process-which takes more time. This is similar to how old people process information.

Imagine that one person knows just two people’s birthdays and can get them right each time he or she is asked. Another person knows the birthdays of 2,000 people , but can only match the right person to the right birthday 9 times out of 10. Can you say the first person has a better memory than the second person?

“The larger the library you have in your head , the longer it usually takes to find a particular word,” Benedict Carey, a science reporter for The New York Times, wrote in an article about the study.

It would be difficult to find one herring (鲱鱼) swimming alone in the sea. Herring always swim in groups c1schools. Sometimes hundreds of thousands of small, silvery herring swim together, covering the surface of the sea for miles.

In a school of herring, all the fish are about the same size and age. Since n2 of the fish is older or wiser than the others, there is no leader, or “teacher”. All the fish is in a school swim in the same d3 and at the same speed. When one turns, they all turn. When there is danger, the fish move closer together.

One 4 that herring swim in schools is that they are more protected from danger. Herring have no defense weapons (防卫武器) to use a5 their many enemies in the sea. When they crowded together, the fish inside the group are p6 by the bodies of the ones on the outside. A school of close swimming herring may look like a s7 , giant fish. Some enemies may be frightened away by the large shape.

As the herring g8 larger, the school is attacked by larger, hungry fish. Each time some herring are lost, but many survive. The survivors stay t9 in smaller schools or join another school of herring.

Female herring do not lay eggs u10they are three or four years old. Each mature fish can lay as many as 40000 eggs. From these eggs come some new schools of herring to replace the disappearing older schools.

【题目】 More than its influence on health, not getting enough sleep can lead to car accidents or other mistakes. Here are what sleep researchers have found about how to sleep.

How much sleep do we actually need?

It is known that all of us naturally need no less than 8 hours of sleep per night. When we sleep below six hours per 24, we’re at an increased risk of health problems. Some of us think we can make up any of those hours lost during the week on the weekends. Suddenly there is no storage system for sleep in the brain.

Can we train ourselves to need less sleep?

As a study in 1964, a 17- year- old boy named Randy Gardener stayed awake for 264 hours. How many people could do anything close to that without dying?

When you are reading this, you might say you usually get 6 hours of sleep and feel just fine . Sleep experts often compare people without enough sleep to drunk drivers: They don't get behind the wheel thinking .They are probably going to kill someone.

Can we drink coffee instead of sleeping?

Coffee can keep us awake. Remember, too much coffee may throw off our sleep and energy cycles. So avoid caffeine for 4 to 6 hours before bedtime.

Does a sense of purpose connect with sleep quality?

A new research suggests a kind of strong connection between purpose in life and sleep. People who have a great sense of purpose usually have better physical and mental health, which in turn explains their higher quality sleep. Perhaps developing a sense of purpose in life could be as useful at improving sleep as the healthy habits above.

【题目】 Do you like music? Do you often listen to it at loud volumes? You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Over 1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss due to listening to loud noise for long periods of time, WHO said. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes can harm your hearing.

The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 decibels for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.

Loud noise is harmful to the inner ear. Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells in our inner ears. These cells detect sounds. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss.

Some people might think that their music isn’t all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.

WHO said the “safe level” for most sound is below 80 decibels for up to 40 hours a week. A level of 80 decibels is nearly the same as the noise of a subway.
