More than 200 years ago, some Englishmen reached Australia and they were surprised to see these unbelievable animals. Today, kangaroos(袋鼠)are still surprising us.

When a baby kangaroo is born, it is about the size of a bean! The little hairless baby climbs into the "pocket" on the front of the mother's body. The pocket, called a pouch(育儿袋),will be the baby's home for the next few months. The little baby kangaroo stays in the pouch, drinking milk and growing. You might think that the baby kangaroo would be in danger of falling out of the pouch, but this is not true. The mother kangaroo can close the pouch, making it warm and safe.

As the baby kangaroo grows up, it pokes(探出)the head out of the mother's pouch and looks around the world: Soon, the baby kangaroo is big enough to move around on its own. But any sign of danger will send the baby kangaroo back to the safety of the pouch. Most baby kangaroos spend at least part of their time inside the pouch before they are almost a year old. Even after a baby kangaroo is too large to fit in the pouch, it will stay with the mother for a few more months.

Kangaroos have very large back legs and feet. While they look cute and lovely, it is important to remember that kangaroos are wild animals. They often fight with each other, sometimes as a kind of social play. Australian Wildlife Centre tells people never to feed or get close to kangaroos.

The sheep farms cover much of the Australian countryside and are good homes for kangaroos. The kangaroos drink the water and eat the sweet grasses on the farms. Of course, the farmers are not always happy to share with the kangaroos.

1.Which of these tells about newborn kangaroos?

A. They are little and hairless.

B. They look like beans.

C. They are born in the mother's pouch.

D. They live alone soon after birth.

2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. It is not surprising to see kangaroos at all now.

B. Kangaroos can be dangerous to people.

C. The baby kangaroo would fall out of the pouch sometimes.

D. Kangaroos have very small back legs and feet.

3.What can you learn from this passage?

A. Kangaroos fight with each other only for fun.

B. Baby kangaroos live in pouches for a few years.

C. Pouches are very important to baby kangaroos.

D. All the people like kangaroos because they are so cute.

4.What will the next paragraph most probably talk about?

A. People protect kangaroos around the world.

B. Kangaroos have many ways to protect their babies.

C. Kangaroos can jump high with the help of legs and tails.

D. The Australian government keeps kangaroos away from the sheep farms.
