【题目】 We all need to buy things from time to time, but do we think about how our shopping affects people, animals and the environment? Here's how you can take better care of the world we live in while you shop.
Ethical ( 伦理的, 道德的 ) shopping
We all need to eat, drink and wear clothes. But what do we know about the products that we buy in shops, in supermarkets or online? Many people in Britain want to know more about the products they buy. They want to know how people, animals and our planet (地球) are treated when food, drinks and clothes are produced.
Fair trade
The Fairtrade Foundation is based (总部设在) in the UK and helps farmers and workers in poorer parts of the world make more money. The organization asks companies that grow products such as coffee or bananas to pay for wages (工资) and to provide their workers with good working conditions. If companies follow these requirements, they will receive a Fairtrade certificate (证书) and can sell their products with the "Fairtrade" mark. About 5 million people in 58 countries benefit from Fairtrade's practices.
Free range
On free range farms, farm animals spend time outside instead of being inside 24 hours a day. Meat, eggs or dairy products, such as milk or cheese, can be free range. Some experts say that this type of farming is preferable because it is very kind and the animals are healthier. Many people also think that free range food tastes better and is more nutritious ( 有营养的 ).
Ethical clothing
Some clothing factories have been accused (指责) of having children as workers and of allowing unsafe conditions in their factories. People nowadays are becoming more interested in where their clothes are made, who they are made by and in what conditions. They want their clothes to look good and be ethical. Most fashion manufacturers (制造商) have information about their workers and their environmental policies (政策) on their websites. With the help of organizations like Fairtrade, shoppers can make more choices about the products they buy.

【题目】 Talking to yourself doesn't mean you're crazy. It's probably that you’re talking to yourself throughout the day whether you're aware of it or not like. “I'm going to be late!” If you say such sentences, you're on the right side of science-there are actually lots of benefits of talking to yourself.
It's confirmed that expressing some inner thoughts out loud can actually help you better master the present and future and is something we should all start doing.Lisa Ferentz, a clinical social worker and psychotherapist, employs this practice most often when it comes to helping her patients develop a positive outlook about themselves and the day ahead. There's nothing more important than the way we talk to ourselves because that inner monologue (独白) informs all our thoughts, emotional states and behavioral choices,” she says.If you're always critical, judgmental, or facing the day with a negative attitude, you're making it pretty hard for yourself to see positivity.
A good way to adopt a healthy mental state is to come up with something that you're grateful for, your own strengths, and positive affirmations to cheer yourself up; then stand in front of a mirror and say those things out loud.If you feel silly, don' t give up.Once you practice it from a positive place, you discover it's quite easy to do.It guides our life whether we're aware of it or not In fact, one study from the University of Lethbridge found that students who were taught how to engage in positive self-talk were able to change their perspectives, attitudes and reactions.Sure enough, talking to yourself is one of the signs you're actually smarter than you realize.
That doesn't mean you can't speak out your frustrations.Just like there's a place for positive self-talk, there's also a place for negative if you do it the right way."There s definitely a value to understanding what you're feeling whether it's positive or negative, says Ferentz.Bringing the negative thing you're thinking and feeling to the surface then gives you the opportunity to re-evaluate it."Once you voice what's worrying you, try asking yourself if it's useful to keep holding on to those thoughts or if it's something you can let go of.
So next time you hold a little two-way conversation with yourself, don't worry. It's perfectly OK.In fact, science approves of it!

【题目】 Instead of gobbling(狼吞虎咽) your food, try eating more slowly. It may help you drop those unwanted pounds. The conclusion is from a new study by Chinese researcher.
The study showed that compared with people who gobbled their food, those who ate at a normal speed were 29 percent less likely to be obese(肥胖的). But those who ate slowly were up to 42 percent less likely to obese. In addition, people who ate slowly tended (往往会) to be healthier and have a healthier lifestyle than those who ate quickly or at a normal speed. “However, this study could not prove that speed eating causes or stops obesity,” the researcher noted.
"Slow eating has its advantages and a few disadvantages ,” said Samantha Heller from New York City. “on the one hand , slow eating gives our body time to register a sense of satisfaction and fullness, so we eat less. We are more likely to enjoy a taste of food. On the other hand, the longer people sit in front of food, the more food they will eat, ”she said.
“Speed eating appears to be far more harmful. People who eat quickly, as many of us do, gobble far more food than they need. In many European countries, slow eating is a way of life,” Heller said. In America, speed eating takes the lead. Thus we need to encourage people to have a change, learn the way of slower eating from Europeans and get a true enjoyment of food.

【题目】 Riding a Mobike on the street, you might hear some people speaking Chinese aloud. Turning to the right, you see a Sichuan-style restaurant. After walking into a store, you see that Huawei smartphones are on sale. But you're not in China — you're in Manchester in Britain. In fact, you might see similar things in many other cities. Chinese products have almost reached all parts of the world. Chinese food has been enjoyed in Western countries for a long time. To meet local people's tastes, Chinese restaurants have made some changes to the dishes. "
One example is the meat," said Yin Hang, who is studying at the university of Wollongong in Australia. "We like to eat meat with the bone in, but people here don't. So Chinese restaurants provide big pieces of meat without bones, even for fish."
“Some Chinese brands are also becoming more popular. In many cities in Europe, stores sell TCL televisions, Haier fridges and Lenovo computers”, reported Reuters.
In the past, most Western people thought Chinese products were cheap and unreliable. But things have changed greatly. "Made in China" has become cool and more people choose Chinese brands. For example, Huawei smartphone sold better than Apple in global smartphone sales for the first time in June and July, behind only Samsung.” They are beautiful and offer some features that American phones don't have,” CNN once said.

【题目】 Everyone has traits (特性) that make us who we are. We have physical traits, like red hair, long legs and funny-looking toes. We also have character traits including humor, warmth, creativity and so on.
Certain physical traits are fully inherited (遗传), such as blue eyes and knobby knees. About 25,000 to 35,000 genes (基因) are in a single cell in the human body. These genes carry the traits that are passed down genetically from parents to their children.
Many traits exist between inheritance and development — the interaction with environment. One example is body shape. It tends to be passed down from parents. But once diet becomes a factor, environment begins to play an important role in how the body develops. Body shape is a trait that is a mixture of inheritance from parents and influence of environment.
So lots of our most important traits have been learned, rather than inherited. For example, if you’re really great at video games, it’s not because your parents passed down the skills in genes. It’s because you have practiced a lot of video games and developed those skills yourself. If you have kids who turn out to be great at video games, it is because they put in the hours, learned the skills, and memorized the moves that are necessary to play the video games well.
Of course, some of us have brains that are more advantageous to video game playing. Say you were born with a large and powerful part of the brain that controls your hand-eye coordination. That is inherited. What you do with it, how you choose to develop that advantage, is up to you.
You can pierce your nose or get a tattoo (纹身) — it doesn’t matter how much you change your body during the lifetime. None of those things will turn into genetic material to be passed down to the next generation. However, if your children grow up in an environment with role models who are pierced and covered in tattoos, they are more likely to get piercings and tattoos!
【1】 is a physical trait that is fully inherited.
A.The eye colorB.The special diet
C.The body shapeD.The pierced nose
【2】What does the underlined word “That ” refer to ?
A.Video game playing.B.Advantageous brains.
C.The shape of your brain.D.Your hand-eye coordination.
【3】According to the passage, the writer believes that .
A.character traits can hardly change during the lifetime
B.the skills of video game playing are passed down to kids
C.a kid’s hand-eye coordination isn’t related to inheritance
D.environment plays an important role in traits development
【4】Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Why are Traits Important?B.How does Inheritance Influence Traits?
C.Where do Traits Come from?D.What are Physical and Character Traits?
