Can plants eat people? Probably not, but there are many plants that eat meat. Some of them are big,
and they can eat small animals. One famous meat-eating plant is the Venus flytrap.
The Venus flytrap is a very strange plant. It grows in dry parts of the United States. Its leaves are
like the pages of a book. (A) They can open and close very quickly. Inside the leaves, there are three small
hairs. If an insect touches one of the hairs, the leaf closes quickly. The insect cannot get out. In about half
an hour, the leaf presses (挤压) the insect until it is dead. Then, the plant covers the insect with a special
liquid (液体). Slowly, the plant eats the insect.
     (B) Plants are living things that have leaves and roots and grow in earth. Most of them get energy from
the sun, the air, and the ground. In some places, the ground is very poor. It doesn't have all the important

Bees live in little houses made of wood. Each house has a very small door for them to come in and out.
We call their houses hives (蜂箱). When the flowers of plants in the fields begin to come out, the bees fly
away very early in the morning to get the sweet juice (甜汁) of the flowers.
A bee has a long tongue (舌头). It goes into the flower to suck up the juice. Then it carries the juice to
the hive, and turns it into honey (蜜). When the bee flies out to look for flowers it may go to places very
far, but it never loses its way. When the rain comes down, the bee will hide in some little hole in a wall or
among the leaves of a tree. When the sun comes out again, it will fly home.

home to make beebread for the young bees.

The moon is the earth's largest and only natural satellite. A satellite is a small body that goes around a
planet. The first man-made satellite went into the orbit in 1957. By 1968 there were over three hundred
satellites in the orbit. Some satellites send back weather pictures. Others send out radio waves. Some
satellites are what we call "junk". In 1963, the United States put millions of small pieces of wire into orbit.
They were used to carry radio waves. Many of these wires may still be there. Some space junk was not
put in the orbit. For example, one piece of space junk is a glove lost by an astronaut!
Space is very big. Does it matter if there is junk in the orbit? Many scientists think so. They say we
must pay much attention to how we use this new resource. They think anything man puts into space
should be made to come back to earth when its work is done. They say it's dangerous to have space junk,
because it's possible for spacecraft to collide with the junk.
1. The first man-made satellite was sent up into space in _____.

A.1957
B.1963
C.1968
D.1975

When you run downhill, gravity pulls you. When you throw a ball up, gravity pulls it down. When you
sit, gravity holds you down. When you lie down, gravity holds you to the bed.
We know gravity is everywhere even though we can't see it.We know it pulls on every stone and every
drop of water. It pulls on everything.
The gravity of the earth pulls everything towards the center of the earth. You know this when you try to
lift a heavy stone. Gravity pulls it down. The more the stone weights, the more gravity pulls on it. To lift
the stone, you must pull up harder than gravity pulls down.
The earth has gravity and the moon also has gravity. The moon has less gravity than the earth has. This
means the moon's gravity does not pull as hard as the earth's gravity.
Do you weigh 60 kilograms? That means the pull of the earth's gravity on you is 60 kilograms. If you
were on the moon, you would weigh only 10 kilograms. The pull of the moon's gravity on you would be
only 10 kilograms.
1. The word "gravity" in the passage means "______" in Chinese.
[     ]

A. 物体质量
B. 物体重量
C. 万有引力
D. 宇宙能量

2. Gravity ______.
[     ]
A. pulls on everything high up
B. is everywhere
C. can be seen everywhere
D. pushes on everything
3. You can't lift up a big stone because ______.
[     ]
A. more gravity pulls it down
B. you don't know how to do it
C. you are not strong
D. gravity is out of the stone
4. If you weigh 50 kilograms, that means ______.
[     ]
A. you can lift up 50 kilograms of things
B. the earth's gravity on you is less than 50 kilograms
C. you can lift up more than 50 kilograms of things
D. the earth's gravity on you is 50 kilograms
5. If a stone weighs four kilograms on the moon, it weighs            .

A. 10
B. 24

阅读理解。
You will have a lot of reading to do in this grade this year. You can do more of it in less time if you learn
to read rapidly. Perhaps you have been told about some habits which keep a person from reading fast and have
been strongly asked to break those which you might have.
Do you still have any of these bad habits? Check yourself by answering "yes" or "no" to these questions.
       (1) Do you move your lips (嘴唇) when reading silently?
       (2) Do you point to words with your finger as you read?
       (3) Do you move your head from side to side as you read?
       (4) Do you read one word at a time?
If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, start at once to break the habit. If you move your lips, hold
your fingers over them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then if your lips
move, you will know it and can stop them.
If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand, the other side with
your right hand. Then you won't have a free finger to use in pointing while reading. If you move your head,
place your chin (下巴)in one hand and hold your head still (静止不动的).
If you read no more than one or two three words at a time, you need to work very hard in learning to take
in more words at each glance (一瞥) as your eyes travel across the lines of words.
Even if you do rather fast now, you can learn to read even faster. As you probably have been told, the fast
reading is to take in whole groups of words as each glance. Read in thought groups and force (强迫) your eyes
along the lines of words as fast as you can make them go. Anyone who practices doing these things will be able
to read faster.
1. You may hold your fingers over your lips while reading so as(为了)______.
[     ]
A. to tell others to be silent
B. to feel whether your lips move or not
C. to hold a piece of paper between them
D. to keep yourself from talking to others
2. When you read, ________.
[     ]
A. don't keep your head still
B. don't hold your books with your hands
C. don't stand up near a desk
D. don't use your finger to point to words
3. If you learn to read fast, ______.
[     ]
A. you can read more in less time
B. you can write faster
C. you can understand better
D. you can read less in more time
4. You must _____ those habits that we are talking about in this reading.
[     ]
A. remember
B. have
C. get rid of (消除)
D. keep
5. The best title for this passage is ________.
[     ]
A. How to read fast
B. Breaking the bad habits
C. Reading rules
D. Ways to read less in more time
