【题目】

We see logos on signs, buildings, television, and even on the clothes we wear. Logos are used to stand for brands (品牌). There are logos such as the Nike "swoosh", the Apple logo and the colorful rings of the Olympic Games. All of these logos are designed to attract our attention. They also help us remember a product or service connected to the logo. However, research performed at the University of California, Los Angeles finds that remembering the details of logos is very difficult. The researchers try to explain this.

Logos are typically designed to be simple and easy to recognize. Yet the frequent exposure (频繁接触) to these logos can actually make our brains overlook the details of logos. It would be challenging to try to remember every single thing that crosses our path. We take in so much information every day that the brain works to notice information that does not need to be stored. It allows the unimportant information to disappear gradually from our memory.

The details of product logos are just the kind of information our brains tell us we do not need. This may be discouraging to logo designers and to companies that use these eye-catching logos. But there are still many business experts who believe in the importance of a recognizable logo.

Even though the brain is likely to pay no attention to unnecessary details, it is also programmed for recognition. When we see logos over and over again, we become familiar (熟悉) with them. This repeated exposure leads our brains to remember the basic idea without all of the details. This general sense of memory has its own benefits. It can make us feel like we really know the product behind the logo. In fact, familiarity with a logo can even make people feel more comfortable about buying or using certain products.

Logos are everywhere we look today. Those people who create logos need to know that people will only remember what they believe is important. A clever design may be interesting, but most people will forget the details.

Rethinking on Sorting of Waste

Waste sorting is becoming increasingly common around the world. It has slowly moved into the center of discussion on the future of business and sustainable(可持续的) development. It may seem like a tiny activity, but is indeed quite complex.Waste sorting is no doubt an important step toward a global circular economy(循环经济) and an environment-friendly society.

In the coming years, the world is supposed to clear out the use of fossil fuels(化学燃料), become more resource- efficient and ensure greater equity(公平).Waste sorting can play a key role in achieving these goals. However, what we need and expect is very different from what we are taking now.Waste sorting in some areas is working reasonably well, for example the glass and metal industries. But when we are looking at global sustainability, there is a need to rethink waste sorting.

The world seems to be in a dilemma. It is no longer clear if the kind of waste sorting done in western nations is part of the problem or the solution.Much of the recycled waste is turned into low-value goods in a way that does not result in a completely reduced use of natural resources.People around the world have begun to realize that much of the waste they sort is not perfect in sustainable material flows.Instead, it is shipped to poor countries, without being used in a correct way.

A waste sorting system for the 21st century should build on the high technology that allows citizens to know more about what is happening to the waste they are sorting. It should also require companies to show how resources-efficient their solutions are In this way, consumers(消费者)will be able to compare choices.

China could start in the next generation of waste sorting systems- those that help citizens to know more about what is happening to the waste they are sorting.Such a waste sorting system would be a driver for innovation and resource efficiency and a true step toward a greener global village.

1The author leads in the topic “waste sorting” by__________.

A.introducing the steps to do itB.comparing the laws on it

C.listing different ideas about itD.presenting the importance of it

2The author says “The world seems to be in a dilemma” to show that__________.

A.new resources need to be discoveredB.the circular economy should be questioned

C.waste sorting in western nations is not perfectD.recycled waste shipped to poor countries is useless

3What can we learn about the waste sorting system for the 2lst century?

A.Recycled waste must be turned into high-value goods.

B.Consumers can suggest the best way to sort their garbage.

C.High technology may help to improve the resource efficiency.

D.Companies should spend most of their money on new technology

【题目】

Five middle school students, all wearing "I choose kindness" T-shirts, sit around a table discussing how to turn that message into action.

It was a class called "Ready, Set, Give!" in West Suburban Summer School, Minnesota, US.

For five days, from 8:30 am to 4 pm, Hannah, 13, Annette, 12, Allison, 12, Adelaide, 13 and Ben, 13, designed activities that could turn their kindness into action.

They learned a lot about service projects. For example, after hearing about "Beyond the Yellow Ribbon", a program that provides care to soldiers (士兵), the students made cards for soldiers themselves. They filled care packages (爱心包裹) with nuts, beef jerky, toothbrushes, even fresheners.

The best part, though, was choosing their own service projects. Adelaide is planning to set up a lemonade stand to help the homeless. Annette is interested in protecting animals.

She plans to create posters to help people understand the dangers of ocean litter, pesticides and pollution. Hannah and Allison are paying attention to protecting the rights and health of young people. Ben wants to help people do a better job of recycling plastic ( 塑料回收 ).

The students also visited Prism, a social service agency (服务机构) in Minnesota. They worked for five hours, sorting donations, putting food on shelves and doing some cleaning.

Sarah Bailey, the activities' organizer, is confident that the students' projects will be successful.

"These guys are ready to take action," Bailey said. "It's more than I hoped for."

A.It is a "I choose kindness" T-shirt.

B.It is a social service agency in Minnesota.
