In the early 1960s, black people and white people in the US could not attend the same schools, sit next to each other on buses, or even use the same water fountains

Those laws no longer exist, thanks to the civil rights movement People stood up and asked for a change in the laws.

On Aug 28, 1963, the civil rights movement reached its height with a march (游行) in Washington, D.C. It attracted around 250,000 people to the Lincoln Memorial At the march, Martin Luther King J. made his famous I Have a Dream speech. In it, he said: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content (内容) of their character.” Those words remain famous to this day.

After the march, King and other civil rights leaders met with US President John F. Kennedy and vice—president Lyndon B. Johnson at the White House.

In 1964, following the assassination (刺杀) of Kennedy, president Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law. The law gave all Americans equal rights in working, voting (选举) and the use of public facilities (设施).

Since the march in Washington, 50 years has passed. Much progress has been made. Barack Obama became the first African—American president in 2009, and his second term ended in 2016. But there is still work to be done.

2根据“Barack Obama became the first African—American president in 2009, and his second term ended in 2016.” Eight years

3根据“The law gave all Americans equal rights in working, voting and the use of public facilities”可知投票和使用公共设施,可推测出该词组是“平等权利”,故答案为平等权利。

4第一小题:根据“In the early 1960s, black people and white people in the US could not attend the same schools, sit next to each other on buses, or even use the same water fountains ”可法律对黑人不公平,所以第一空是“unfair”;根据“thanks to the civil rights movement”可知是感谢,所以第二空是“Thanks”;根据“People stood up and asked for a change in the laws.” 第二小题:根据“At the march, Martin Luther King J. made his famous I Have a Dream speech.”可知第一空是“演讲”,所以用“speech”;根据“Those words remain famous to this day.” 第三小题:根据“In 1964, following the assassination of Kennedy, president Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law. ”可知第一空是“在……之后”,所以用“After”;第二空是“签署”,所以用“signed”。故答案为unfairThankslawsspeechtodayAftersigned

【题目】 “Why do I live? Why do I wish for anything, or do anything? Is there anything my my life that will not be destroyed by my death?” Like Leo Tolstoy, the famous Russian writer, many people ask these difficult questions. Tolstoy spent his whole life trying to answer these difficult questions.

As a young man, he thought people could achieve perfection if they tried hard enough. So he worked very hard to be the best in everything. He thought that he would find meaning and truth in success.

In the 1850s, Tolstoy wrote his first stories. He wrote about his life in the army. He also told stories about his childhood. These works were published and Tolstoy became a well-known writer.

He earned the respect he always wanted. Many rich and smart men met and talked with Tolstoy. Some of them were writers like him. They talked a lot about faith(信仰) and the meaning of life. But soon Tolstoy recognized that these men were not perfect. Now he knew they could not answer his questions about faith.

So in the 1860s, Tolstoy tried a different way to find the meaning of life. He opened a school for the children of his serfs— the people who worked on his land. These workers were very poor. He wanted to help them because he thought they were more honest than the rich people he knew.

Tolstoy learned a lot from his workers. He understood how they worked hard to support their families. He began to believe that marriage and family would give his life meaning. So in 1862, Leo Tolstoy married a young woman named Sonya Behrs.

The next 15 years were the best years of Tolstoy’s life. It was during this time that he wrote his most famous books— War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Many experts say that War and Peace is one of the greatest books ever written. In these books, Tolstoy believed humans should live a simple life and take care of their families. Tolstoy thought this would satisfy him and bring him happiness.

Leo Tolstoy is still a very respected writer today. His faith and writings have influenced many people all over the world.
