Imagine having an ear made out of an apple. It seems like a crazy idea from a horror movie. But it could happen in the near future.

Canadian biophysicist, Andrew Pelling used an apple to grow a human ear. He thinks fruit and vegetables can be used to cheaply repair human body parts in the future.

Scientists have been trying to grow organs( 器官) in labs to replace our old ones. But it is a hard Job. For example, liver cells( 肝细胞)can grow in a lab, but the cells still need things like blood vessels( 血管) to actually work. These things have to grow inside a scaffold(支架) In the past, scientists have used manmade materials, animal parts and even dead people as scaffolds. But that has proved to be difficult and expensive.

Pelling and his team, however, found the apple to be a cheap and easy to use scaffold.

They first out an apple into the shape of an ear. Then they used a special way to take out the apple’s cells and make it a scaffold. The team then added human cells to the apple and watched it grow

You can implant these scaffolds into the body, and the body will send in cells and a blood supply and actually keep these things alive, “Pelling said during a Ted Talk speech.

The team put the apple scaffold inside a living mouse and the mouse’s cells slowly took over the pieces of apple.

Now Pelling is thinking of other fruit, plants or vegetables to use,

He says that the shape of flower petals could be perfect for repairing skin. And asparagus(芦苇) could fix a broken spine(脊柱).

Now, Pelling and his team are trying hard to put these crazy ideas into reality

1Pelling’s idea of manmade ear seems crazy because he used ________ as scaffolds.

A.animal partsB.dead people

C.manmade materialsD.ordinary apples

2The underlined word “implant” in Paragraph 7 probably means ________.

A.pickB.putC.produceD.protect

3Which is the right order of making an ear out of an apple according to the passage

a. Put the apple scaffold inside a mouse.

b. Add human cells to the apple scaffold.

c. Cut an apple into the shape of an ear.

d. Make the apple ear a scaffold.

e. Take out the apple’s cells in a special way.

A.abcdeB.bedaeC.cedbaD.cdaeb

4From the last three paragraphs, we can infer that Pelling will experiment with other fruit, plants or vegetables ________.

A.to make human earsB.to repair burnt skin

C.to fix a broken spineD.to make human body parts

根据开头“Imagine having an ear made out of an apple. It seems like a crazy idea from a horror movie想象一个苹果做成的耳朵。这似乎是恐怖电影里的疯狂想法”,可知是因为他使用普通的苹果作为支架,故选D

2考查词义理解。pick捡;put放;produce生产;protect保护。根据后文的举例“The team put the apple scaffold inside a living mouse研究小组将苹果支架植入一只活老鼠体内”,可知本句“implant”意思是“放置put”,故选B

根据第二段第二句“He thinks fruit and vegetables can be used to cheaply repair human body parts in the future. 他认为,未来可以用水果和蔬菜来廉价修复人体器官”和倒数第二段“He says that the shape of flower petals could be perfect for repairing skin. And asparagus could fix a broken spine花瓣的形状可以完美地修复皮肤。芦笋可以修复断了的脊椎”,可知他想用水果蔬菜来造人体器官,to make human body parts(制作人体器官)符合题意,故选D

【题目】Young Inventor Creates Plastic from Fish Scales

Lucy Hughes, a 24-year-old English inventor, has used fish skin and scales(鳞)to create a new kind of plastic that will break down in about six weeks. Her invention won 2019 James Dyson Award, which was created by the famous English inventor James Dyson to encourage students to try to use their creativity to solve problems in the real world.

Lucy Hughes studied how to design products at the University of Sussex in England. As a designer, she knew a lot about how wasteful many products are. Plastic bags, for example, are often used once for a short time and then thrown away. She decided to challenge herself to make something out of waste instead

The University of Sussex isn't far from the coast. Ms. Hughes spent some time studying the fishing business and the waste from fish that were thrown away. After some tests, she decided that the fish skin and scales seemed like the most likely parts for her product. She tried more than 100 different experiments before getting things just right. Ms. Hughes called her finished product "MarinaTex". It solves two problems: the single-use plastic and fish waste.

MarinaTex is clear and feels like plastic, but it's stronger than normal plastic that is of the same thickness. It is also cheap to make since it's made from fish waste. The process of making MarinaTex also doesn't use much energy. Most importantly, MarinaTex doesn't take hundreds of years to break down. On its own, it breaks down in four to six weeks.

For winning the contest, Ms. Hughes will earn f,30, 000. Her school will get f,5, 000. She is looking forward to moving ahead with her idea. She hopes the award money will help her with the process of getting MarinaTex into use as quickly as possible. She thinks that one of the best uses for MarinaTex will be in some kinds of food packaging.

1What did Lucy Hughes create?

2How many experiments did Lucy Hughes try?

3What problems does MarinaTex solve?

4What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

5How will Lucy Hughes possibly spend the award money?

Dog’s Best Friend

Jarrett Little was road testing his mountain bike outside of Columbus, Georgia, when his riding partner, Chris Dixon, stopped suddenly. Something nearby moving among the trees had caught her attention. It turned out to be a sandy-colored five-month-old dog.

“He was really thin, and had a broken leg,” Little told CBS News. The cyclists fed the friendly dog and shared their water. They also quickly realized that the dog was coming with them, although they had no idea how. They were more than seven miles from downtown and riding bikes. “We couldn’t leave him,” Little said. “Out there next to the Oxbow Meadows, he was going to end up as alligator (短吻鳄) food.”

Little, a 31-year-old business owner, had an idea. He carefully picked up his new friend and put the 38-pound dog’s back legs into the pockets of his cycling shirt. Then he placed the dog’s front legs over his shoulders.

“He was hurt, so he wasn’t trying to fight,” Little says. “He was also happy that we were there, touching him, and hadn’t taken off on him.”

Their 30-minute ride into town ended at a bike store, where they got more water and food for the dog. “That was when Andrea Shaw, a company worker, happened by. The dog went straight to her, smelling and “loving on her,” says Dixon. Shaw was touched and, after learning what had happened, decided to keep the dog.

Shaw called him Columbo after the town where they’d met and planned an operation on his leg. Today, Columbo is living the high life on a farm with a horse and a six-year-old boy to keep him company. As Dixon said, “He is really the luckiest dog alive.”

A.She noticed something moving among the trees.

B.She had cycled seven miles and wanted to rest.

C.She met some other riding partners by chance.

D.She wanted to share some water with Little.

2What can we learn about the dog?

A.He is unfriendly to people.

B.He is kept happily on a farm.

C.He weighed about 31 pounds.

D.He ended up as alligator food.

3According to the passage, the dog’s best friend is .
