"Climbing Mount Qomolangma is a kind of discovery," said a reporter of CCTV. He was sent to join
the climbing team for broadcasting (播放) this TV program. The climbers climbed Mount Qomolangma
from May 18 to 24. CCTV also sent a team to join in this most dangerous and exciting sport. They called
it "Standing at the World's Third Pole (极) in 2003".

Chinese climbers first showed our national flag to the world on the top of the mountain in 1960.
Once someone asked why the pioneers never stopped trying to reach the top. "I don't think climbing

What do you think is the most common illness? Do you get ill sometimes? We are lucky to live now,
because there are lots of medicines to make people better.
The most common illness in the world is the cold. It often begins with a sore throat. Then you sneeze
and your nose runs. You usually have a headache too. Often you cough later. It's not a very bad illness,
but you can feel quite ill.
There isn't a cure (治愈) for a cold, but you can take medicines to make you feel better. For instance,
aspirin (阿司匹林) can stop your headache. It is good to rest, and to drink a lot of water too. A doctor
once said to me, "With the proper (适当的) medicine, a cold will continue for seven days. With no
medicine, it will continue for a whole week!"
Where does our medicine come from? A long time ago, people knew that some plants made them feel
better. They ate the leaves, the roots, the fruit, or the seeds of plants. For instance, the juice of lemons
makes a sore throat feel better.
In modern times, scientists have looked at these plants, and found out which chemicals (化学物质)
are in them. Many of our medicines today are made from those chemicals.
There are some illnesses which we can't cure yet. And nobody has found a cure for old age. But
because of modern medicines, many people now live longer than their grandparents.

2. Can aspirin stop a headache?

Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States.   People there have heart
trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it
is very hot in summer and very cold in winter. People in these states have more heart  trouble when the
weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists, the IQ of a
group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was
10% lower.  The wind can help people have higher intelligence.  Very hot weather,  on the other hand,
can make it lower. Students in many schools  in the United States often get worse on  exams  in the hot
months of the year (July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people's feelings.  Winter may be a bad  time for thin people.
They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather,  too.  But fat
people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.
Low air pressure (气压) may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops
on low-pressure days.
Are you feeling sad, tired, or forgetful today? It may be the weather's problem.
1. _________ can cause health problems.
A. Hot and wet weather
B. A strong wind
C. Warm weather
D. Low air
2. A report shows that people may have higher intelligence when _______ comes.
A. rain
B. a strong wind
C. very hot weather
D. low air pressure
3. According to the writer, fat people may feel bad in _______ weather.
A. cold
B. cool
C. warm
D. hot
4. The writer wants to tell us that ________.
A. hot and cold weather influences all people in the same way
B. Weather influences people's hearings
C. the IQ changes when weather changes
D. people feel good on low-pressure days
5. The best title for this passage is "________".

C. Weather Influences Feelings

Taking an after-school class will give you a head start in high school. But if it means walking home
every day, even in snow and rain, would you do it?
I did. I took part in an after-school Spanish class. Because it was after school, no school buses were
there to take me home when the class ended. And my parents couldn't pick me up, so I had to walk home.
At first I hated the walk because of the long distance. But after a few months, I got used to (习惯于)
it and it became one of my daily activities, like getting dressed and brushing my teeth. And I began to
enjoy it. I got to see things like birds flying and trees changing color. A few times I saw something very
special, like a small snake near the sidewalk, or two cars that came very close to crashing!
Many of my classmates saw what I did. Once, one girl in my class asked her mother to drive me
home because it was raining outside, and I didn't have an umbrella (雨伞). Some people who I didn't
know even gave me a ride - they thought it was too cold out.
People always think walking long distances is difficult. Modern technology (技术) makes common
things, like walking, seem impossible. Many people, like myself, live in the country and are close to
nature, but also far away from it because of technology.
1. What class did the writer take part in after school?
A. Math class
B. Spanish class
C. Art class
D. English class
2. When did the writer begin to enjoy walking home?
A. At the very beginning.
B. After a week.
C. After a few months.
D. After a year.
3. Why did the writer begin to enjoy walking home?
A. Because something interesting happened on the road every day.
B. Because the writer could get a ride from some strange people.
C. Because the writer enjoyed walking in the rain alone.
D. Because the writer could enjoy some interesting things happening on the road.
4. When it was a rainy or snowy day, ______.
A. some kind people would give him a ride
B. nobody saw him and nobody helped him
C. the writer would choose to stay at school
D. the writer's parents would come to pick him up
5. What does the last paragraph want to tell us?
A. It is difficult for many people to walk long distances.
B. Modern technology brings people a lot of inconvenience (不方便).
C. Modern technology makes people live better, but farther from the nature.
D. It is impossible for people to walk a long distance nowadays.
