At 73,Barbara Joe still remembers hearing President Kennedy announcing the creation of the Peace Corps. It’s a volunteer program and it provides help to people in developing countries. Barbara Joe was 23 years old then and she showed great interest in the idea. But she was already married and she would soon have her first child.
Over the years,Barbara did volunteer work occasionally and visited many developing countries in South America. In 1998,she finally became a full-time volunteer and joined the Peace Corps. She was 60 at that time.
The Peace Corps has no age limit, but volunteers are often young. The selection (挑选) process is strict and only one in ten is accepted. Barbara was by far the oldest person in the training course.
Barbara was a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras for three and a half years. At that time she taught the local people about AIDS prevention, gave them medicine, and even helped a few mothers give birth to babies. Her daughter went to visit her during her stay. She was surprised to see how happy her mother was and how well she dealt with the terrible living conditions.
Barbara has written a book about her experience. “You are never too old to follow your dreams”’ she says. “It's never too late to reinvent(以新形象示人) yourself."

Nola is a 4l-year-old northern white rhino(犀牛) . She lives in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in California. She is one of only four remaining northern white rhinos in the world. The other three live in Kenya,Africa.
World Rhino Day,held on September 22 ,is a day to raise awareness(意识) of Nola and the less than 30,000 other rhinos left on Earth.
“Rhinos need our help today, not tomorrow,” said Nola’ s keeper Jane Kennedy. “Last year we lost over 1 ,200 rhinos just in South Africa. If we continue to lose more than 1,000 rhinos a year,in 10 to 20 year’s all rhinos on the planet will be gone."
Rhinos have lived on Earth for more than 40 million years, but they are now endangered because of human activities.
Scientists are trying to find ways to prevent rhinos from becoming extinct. In 1975,the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research started a program called the Frozen Zoo. Through the program, researchers have collected cell samples ( 细胞样品) from more than 8,000 different animal species(种) , including the northern white rhino. Sciq^tists hope ftat by studying the rhino cells, they will know more about the rhino, and will find ways to increase its numbers.
At the San Diego Zoo,children adults are welcome to visit and speak with zookeqjers to learn about rhinos. They can also take part in different activities. But you don’t have to live in San Diego to celebrate World Rhino Day. It is celebrated around the world to teach people about rhinos.
