The following are some tips for becoming a successful businessman by Michael Bloomberg. They are based on his experience of building a company from the ground up, leading New York City as mayor(市长), and so on.

Take Risks

Life is too short to spend your time avoiding failure.

In 1981, at the age of 39, I lost my job. The next day I took a big risk and began my own company. In 2001, when I was debating whether to run for mayor, most people advised me not to do it. But one person said, “If you can imagine yourself giving a concession(败选)speech, then why not go for it?” That was the best advice I received, and I followed it.

In order to succeed, you must first be willing to fail— and you must have the courage to go for it anyway.

Make your own luck

Luck plays a part in success. The harder you work, the luckier you get.

Whatever you choose to do, even if it’s not the job of your dreams, always work hard at it. Be the first person at work in the morning and the last to leave at night. Hard work creates chances.

Never stop learning

The most powerful word in English language is “why”. There is nothing so powerful

as an open, inquiring mind(探究精神). Whatever field you choose for starting a business — be a lifelong student.

Give back

You are responsible for your success and failure, but you only succeed if you share the reward with others.

My first donation was a $ 5 check to my alma mater (母校) . And while the checks(支票)may be bigger today, they come with the same spirit.

You don’t have to be wealthy to give back. You can give back by giving your time and talents.

A. newspaper B. place C. company D. person

2.What did the writer do at the age of 59?

A. Lost his job. B. Ran for mayor.

C. Built a company. D. Became a teacher.

3.From the passage, we can infer that the writer .

A. is a young mayor B. seldom cares about others

C. is lucky all the time D. is a hard-working man

4.Which of the following isn’t mentioned in the tips?

A. Failure is the mother of success.

B. It’s never too old to learn.

C. Money is everything.

D. Luck comes from hard work.

5.In which of the following columns(栏目)can you find the article?

Three months after Shang Hai (not his real name) began studying at an American high school, he received an e-mail of dismissal*. The academic performance*of the Chinese boy was poor–he had got grades C and D (A is the best)

Shang is not alone. In the first half of 2014, the number of Chinese students studying in the US has increased to 275,000. But according to China Youth Daily, about 5 percent of Chinese students in US colleges are unable to graduate.

They are being sent back home because their grades are not good enough (62.1%), they cheat, such as copying other students’ work (21.4%), and they have poor class attendance* (10.9%).

These appear to be not from a lack of intelligence*, but a lack of discipline*, said the report. The situation has been getting worse since more Chinese students are studying in foreign countries at younger ages. According to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the number of Chinese students studying in US private high schools has increased from 65 in 2005 to 23,795 in 2013.

Far away from their parents, some students are said to spend a lot of time chatting with friends, going to parties, and playing online games.

There are also great language problems. Although they have to pass language tests to study abroad, daily communication is still hard for many Chinese overseas students, according to research at Indiana University in 2013.

Because of this, many of them just stick with other Chinese students. They don’t often take part in sporting events or study groups. And some could only catch bits of information during classes, said the research.

1.Some Chinese overseas students spend lots of time ________.

C. chatting with parents D. visiting American friends

2.Many Chinese overseas students stick with Chinese students because ________.

A. they are too young B. they have language problems

C. they don’t like American lifestyle D. they miss their family in China

3.What can we learn from the passage?

B. The number of Chinese students studying in American has fallen since 2013.

C. A lots of Chinese students take part in sporting events while they are studying abroad.

We live in a noisy world. Young and old alike are troubled by sounds over which we may have little or no control: car and house alarms, motorcycles, loudspeakers, even movie previews.

We attend rock concerts, weddings, parties and sports events at which the music is so loud that you can hardly hear the person sitting next to you. At home, televisions, stereos and computer games are often turned up so loud that listeners cannot hear a doorbell or a telephone.

As if environmental noise were not enough, now we surround children with noisy toys and personal listening devices that can permanently damage their hearing. A series of studies conducted in 2002 indicated that even moderate (缓和的) background noise can interfere with how they learn language. In fact, children in classrooms on the noisy side of a school had lower reading scores than those whose classes were on the quiet side.

Noise-induced (噪音诱发的) hearing loss can come about in two ways: from a brief exposure to a very loud noise or from consistent exposure to moderate-level noise. Thus, there is much concern about the lasting effects of MP3 players that are turned up loud enough to block out surrounding sound, like street noise. An MP3 player at maximum volume produces about 105decibels(分贝)— 100 times as severe as 85 decibels, where hearing damage begins.

So, before buying noise-making toys, parents would do well to listen to how loud they are. If the item comes with a volume control, monitor its use to make sure it is kept near the lowest level. Consider returning gifts that make loud noises, or disable the noise-making function. Children who play computer games and stereo equipment should be warned to keep the volume down. Most iPads have a control that allows parents to set a maximum volume.

Avoid taking children to loud action movies. If you do go and the sound seems deafening, ask the management to turn down the volume or insist on your money back.

The League for the Hard of Hearing urges parents to encourage participation in quiet activities, like reading, doing puzzles, making things with construction toys, playing educational computer games, drawing and painting, and visiting libraries and museums.
