Phys ed (physical education) is making a comeback, but with a difference. The new way is to teach skills that are useful beyond gym class, like lifting weights, balancing their diets and building physical endurance(耐力).
Considering that 15% of American children 6 to 18 are overweight, supporters say more money and thought must be put into phys ed curriculum. In many cases, that may mean not just replacing the old gym-class model with fitness programs but also starting up phys ed programs because school boards(教育委员会)often “cut P.E. completely or decrease(减少)its teachers or the days it is offered,” says Alicia Moag-Stahlberg, the director of Action for Health Kids. The difference in phys ed programs is its short of a national standard.
The wisdom of the new idea has some scientific support. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin have showed how successful the fit-for-life model of gym class can be. They observed how 50 overweight children lost more weight when they cycled and skied cross-country than when they played sports. The researchers have also found that teaching group sports like football results in less overall(全体的)movement, partly because the students who are unwilling to do may sit on the bench.
Another problem with simply teaching group sports in gym class is that only a small part of students continue playing them after finishing their high school. The new method teaches skills that translate to adulthood, which means kids are given skills and experiences so they can lead a physically active life in their future.
小题1:Is the new Phys ed program different from the one before?
小题2:What does the new P.E. program teach the students?
小题3:According to the passage, what do some school boards do with P.E?
小题4:What are the problems with simply teaching group sports?
小题5:What’s the passage mainly about?

Sitting on exercise balls brings more than a smile to students and teachers.
Some fourth-graders at Conrad Weiser West Elementary School in Womelsdorf love their new chairs-—probably because they're not really chairs at all.
The kids are sitting on the air-filled balls. But different from those just for exercise, these have small legs that keep them from rolling. "Besides, they’re fun,b" says Pownall.
According to WittFitt,b a company that has sold balls to more than 200 schools, they can improve kids' posture and classroom behavior.

Lisa Witt felt so strongly about the use of balls as chairs that she started WittFitt. She said the company not only encourages the use of balls but also educates teachers and students on how to use them. "We sell balls in 24 states in America, three provinces in Canada and Japan." says Witt.

The cost of medical care in the United States is very high. The time and money that doctors spend on their medical education is probably one reason for this problem.

Sometimes I get angry, but then again, I tell myself these are animals.”
After nine months’training, the rats were taken to a minefield. They’ran across the minefield, stopped, sat and scratched the ground to tell the deminers*  that they smelt out’a mine.  Then the mine was cleared. It had  taken two ‘deminers  a day to clear a 200㎡ . minefield, but with the help of two rats ‘they could finish it in two hours.
The rats and the deminers saved thousands of lives, “The rats did this job much better than we expected. So far they have helped to make almost 2,000,000㎡ of land safe. They are heroes,” said Bart Weeqens, the head of the APOPO.

Expert(专家) say that students usually need eight to ten hours’ sleep at night, but most Chinese students do not get enough sleep. Some Chinese parents are usually glad to see their children studying late. They will think their children work very hard, but not all parents are happy about this. Once a mother told us that every morning her 10-year-old boy put up one finger (手指) with his eyes still closed, begging(请求) for one more minute to sleep. Like thousands of students “early birds” in China, he has to get up before six every morning.
A report shows that without a good night’s sleep, students seem to be weaker (虚弱) than they should be. Many students have fallen asleep during class at one time or another. Too much homework is not the only reason why students stay up late. Some watch TV or play the computer games late into the night.
Experts have ever said that the students should develop good study habits. So some clever students never study last, they are able to work well in class.
