【题目】 Matt Smith was about 10 years old when his father died. His mother found it difficult to provide for a large family. Still, she decided to send her oldest child Matt to school and buy him the books he needed.

At one time, Matt wanted a grammar book in order to join a class. But the book was so expensive that his mother couldn’t afford it.

He was very upset about this and went to bed with a heavy heart, thinking about what could be done to get the book.

As soon as he woke in the morning, he found that a heavy snow had fallen and the cold wind was blowing hard. “Ah”, he said, “ every problem brings a solution for some people.” He got up, ran to his neighbor’s house and offered to clean the snow from their sidewalk(人行道). His offer was accepted, after he completed this work and received his pay, he went to another neighbor and offered the same service. Then he went to several other houses until he had enough money to buy the grammar book.

When school began, Matt was in his seat, the happiest boy there, ready to begin studying with his new book. From that time on, Matt always did well in all of his classes.

Because he had the will(意志), he always found a way.

Many countries follow special customs when a child’s baby teeth fall out.1

For example, Koreans have the custom of throwing the fallen tooth onto the roof of a house so that a magpie (喜鹊) can take the tooth away and bring a new tooth for the child.2

3In Mexico and Spain, for example, it is thought that a mouse takes a fallen tooth away and leaves some money. But in Mongolia, it is dogs that take children’s teeth away. Dogs are highly respected in Mongolian culture. It is believed that the new tooth will grow strong if the baby tooth is fed to a dog, so parents in Mongolia will put their children’s fallen teeth in a piece of meat and feed it to a dog.

In France and the USA, a child will put a fallen tooth under his or her pillow before going to bed. It is thought that in the early morning, when the child is still sleeping, the Tooth Fairy will take the tooth away and leave something else under the pillow. What she will leave is hard to know. 4However, in the United States, she may leave money.

A.These customs all connect baby teeth with animals.

B.It is said that in France the Tooth Fairy may leave some candies.

C.Many of these customs tell stories about animals taking the teeth.

D.This custom is also followed by some other Asian countries, such as Japan and Vietnam.

【题目】 You frown (皱眉) when you are angry or upset. Your parents pat(轻拍) your head to show their love. Some players like to throw their arms forward. It seems they’re flying, after they score. Body language is everywhere. How important is it?

Body language does not use words. It is communication with the movement or position(位置) of your body. The way you stand, a hand gesture are examples of body language. And it also includes facial expressions.

According to American scientist Edward T. Hall, in a conversation between two people, 65 percent of communication is body language. In some cases you can even express yourself without any words at all. For example, your friend asks you to come on a picnic with him, you give him an “OK”gesture to say: “Yes, sounds good!” Sometimes, your words say one thing but your body language says another. You may touch your face unconsciously (无意识地) while telling a lie.

In different cultures, the same body language may mean different things. In the US, eye communication during a conversation means you are interested in what the other person is saying. But in some Asian countries, it is impolite to look straight at a person when you are talking to him or her.

People in some countries use different body language to show the same meaning. In France, people kiss cheeks (脸颊) to say hello. The Japanese prefer to bow and Maoris in New Zealand touch noses when greeting.

1What is body language?

2How many examples of body language are mentioned (提及) in Paragraph 2?

3What gesture will you show to your friend if you agree to go swimming with him?

4In America, can we look straight at the person during a conversation?

5How do Maoris in New Zealand say hello to each other?
