We need to be responsible(有责任心的)for our environment. Being a frugal consumer(节俭的消费者)is one way to help. But, what exactly does that mean?

Use it up

____

You do not always need to have new things. Suppose there are holes in your socks. Mend them and wear them longer. You don’t have to have the latest telephone until the old one doesn’t work anymore. Then you get a new one. Think twice before replacing something that still works.

②_________

When something you want is not on hand look for something else that you already have to take its place. Suppose you are preparing your lunch for tomorrow and want a better sandwich. However, there is not any butter in your home. Have a cheese sandwich instead so that you can use all of the cheese. With a little thought, you can make something do, instead of buy something new.

Do without

Think about all those things that you would like to have. Do you really need them? How long will you really play with that new toy? Make a list of things that you want. Delete the things that you don’t really need, so you can save a lot of resources(资源).

【1】When can you get a new telephone according to the passage?

【2】Please translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.

【3】What should you do if you don’t have butter for a sandwich at home?

【3】You can use something else, for example cheese(instead of butter).

【4】A, C

【5】Being a frugal consumer/Being frugal/One way to be responsible for our environment/What does being a frugal consumer mean/Be responsible for our environment/How to be a frugal consumer

You don’t have to have the latest telephone until the old one doesn’t work anymore可知,为了做一个对我们的环境有责任心的消费者,作者认为,只有我们的旧手机不能再工作的时候,我们才需要换最新的手机。

something that still works仍然能工作的东西;think twice 三思,仔细考虑。

However, there is not any butter in your home. Have a cheese sandwich instead so that you can use all of the cheese可知,当你在家里做三明治没有黄油的时候,你可以用奶酪来代替。

Be responsible to our environment等。

Billy always loved blueberries. They were his favorite fruit. Today he was going to make juice with his uncle. His uncle liked to make juice out of everything. He made carrot juice, apple juice, vegetable juice, and more juices. He had never made blueberry juice before though!

First, Billy and his uncle went to a blueberry farm. They were each given a basket. They picked for an hour and got several pounds. It was hard work picking the little berries from the trees. Now Billy understood why they were expensive in the store.

Next, they had to wash the fruit. Some of them still had leaves. Those had to be pulled off. Then the bad berries had to be thrown away. They washed the berries and made them air-dry.

After that, they pushed the blueberries through a strainer(滤网). The strainer caught most of the seeds and skins, and only left a small glass of dark purple juice to them.

When they tasted the juice, it wasn't very sweet. Billy's uncle didn't want to add white sugar to the juice. It was better to use a naturally sweet juice, like apple juice, pear juice, or grape juice. They used grape juice as a sweetener (味剂), because grapes had a similar color to the blueberries.

Finally, they could drink it. It was a lot of work to make juice, but it sure was refreshing!

It was a cold winter day. A woman drove up to the Rainbow Bridge tollbooth. “I’m paying for myself, and for the six cars behind me,” she said with a smile, handing over seven tickets. One after another, the next six drivers arriving at the tollbooth were informed, “Some lady up ahead already paid your fare.”

It turned out that the woman, Natalie Smith, had read something on a friend’s refrigerator: “Practice random (随意的) kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” The phrase impressed (使某人印象深刻) her so much that she copied it down.

Judy Foreman saw the same phrase on a warehouse wall far away from home. When it stayed on her mind for days, she gave up and drove all the way back to copy it down. “I thought it was beautiful,” she said, explaining why she’d taken to writing it at the bottom of all her letters, “like a message from above.” Her husband, Frank, liked the phrase so much that he put it up on the classroom wall for his students, one of whom was the daughter of Alice Johnson, a local news reporter. Alice put it in the newspaper, saying that though she liked it, she didn’t know where it came from or what it really meant.

Two days later, Alice got a call from Anne Herbert, a woman living in Marin. It was in a restaurant that Anne wrote the phrase down on a piece of paper, after turning it around in her mind for days.

“Here’s the idea,” Anne says. “Anything you think there should be more of, do it randomly.” Her fantasies include painting the classrooms of shabby schools, leaving hot meals on kitchen tables in the poor part of town, and giving money secretly to a proud old lady. Anne says, “Kindness can build on itself as much as violence (暴力) can build on itself.”

The acts of random kindness spread. If you were one of those drivers who found your fare paid, who knows what you might have been encouraged to do for someone else later. Like all great events, kindness begins slowly, with every single act. Let it be yours!

【1】 Why did Natalie Smith pay for the six cars behind her?

A. She had seven tickets.

B. She hoped to please others.

C. She wanted to show kindness.

D. She knew the car drivers well.

【2】 Judy Foreman copied down the phrase because she ___ .

A. thought it was beautifully written

B. wanted to know what it really meant

C. decided to write it on a warehouse wall

D. wanted her husband to put it up in the classroom

【3】Who came up with the phrase according to the passage?

A. Judy Foreman. B. Natalie Smith.

C. Alice Johnson. D. Anne Herbert.

【4】 What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. People should practice random kindness to those in need.

B. People who receive kindness are likely to offer it to others.

C. People should practice random kindness to strangers they meet.

D. People who receive kindness are likely to pay it back to the giver.
