【题目】Answer the questions

What does friendship mean? There is no definite answer. Friendship is also necessary in daily life. When you are happy, friendship is just like adding flowers on the brocade (图案); when you are sad, friendship is a dose (一剂) of consolation (安慰); if you are in trouble, friends will surround you and remove the barriers for you; if you have a hard nut to crack, you can turn to friends for help. A man without friends is an angel without wings, whose life will suffer in the long tolerance of loneliness and depression. We have much to share with our friends in life, perplexity (困惑), excitement and bitterness.

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while – then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.

Americans are ready to receive us foreigner at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.

Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily activities. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.

For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

1What can we share with friends in our daily life?

___________________________

2What will Americans do even after a long break?

__________________________

3The idea about friendship is the same as ours, isn’t it? Where do the Americans express their welcome?

__________________________

4How will we probably be treated when we arrive in America to visit an American friend?

__________________________

5What does the underlined words “generous with our time” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

__________________________

6A suitable title for this passage would probably be “________________”.

【答案】

1Perplexity, excitement and bitterness.

2They will pick up the friendship again.

3No, it isn’t. At their homes.

4We will be treated hospitably.

5It means willing to spend time.

Electives(选修课) are always popular with students because they offer the chance to learn something exciting, and they’re a welcome break from regular courses like maths and physics. Here are just a few of the exciting electives lucky teenagers can take in some of China’s middle schools.

Self-defense skills

A school from Chongqing

The school offers a self-defense course — just for girls. Those who attend the lessons have the chance to study basic self-protection skills in a one-on-one practice. They learn how to get away when they need to and defend themselves against attacks. “I feel safer in myself now,” said Zhang Yi, 15, a girl student.

Pottery

A school from Tianjin

The famous pottery scene in a movie called Ghost is a lasting memory for many movie-goers. Young artists at the school love to get their hands dirty creating beautiful pieces. Students learn how to design and make various clay projects. At the end, they have the skills to make their own clay bowls, cups, vases and pots.

Horse riding

A school from Beijing

Equestrians(马术) can look pretty cool, can’t they? Teenagers at this school can now choose a course in riding skills. They’re taught to communicate with their horses and how to use reins. To ride a horse in the proper way, a student must hold the head forward and keep his back straight. Students come away from this elective not only knowing how to ride a horse gracefully, but also physically fitter!

Couplets

A school from Nanjing

How many of you can write a couplet? This old literary(文学的) form is slowly disappearing, but Chinese culture lovers at the school are trying to make it alive. For their elective, teenagers study old couplets and try to rhyme(押韵) their own lines. Many of this year’s students can’t wait for the Spring Festival, when they’ll be able to show off their new skills.

【题目】 Tom walked away from the school. He would never return. He was a lonely boy. Nobody loved him. He met his best friend, Joe Harper. Joe’s mother had beaten him. But Joe hadn’t done anything wrong. He also wanted to leave home. The two boys began to make plans. They both agreed to become pirates (海盗).

Five kilometers south of St Petersburg was an island called Jackson’s island. It was close to the other shore of the river. They decided to go there. They looked for Huckleberry Finn, and he joined them at once. They decided to meet on the river bank three kilometers from the village at midnight. Each would bring tools for fishing, and whatever they could steal — like those bad guys.

Tom arrived with a boiled ham and a corn, Joe had some bacon, and Huck had a frying pan, all stolen from home or their neighbors. They took some fire from an empty boat, and then they set off on the raft (木筏). At about 2 a.m. they landed on Jackson’s Island, and carried their only possessions onto the shore. They decided to sleep in the open air. That was what pirates did.

They built a fire, cooked some bacon for supper, and ate half of the corn they had brought. It seemed wonderful to be eating in the wild forest of an undiscovered island. They said they would never go back.

“It’s just the life for me,” said Tom, “You don’t have to get up in the mornings and go to school, and wash all those foolish things. A pirate doesn’t have to do anything.”

Huck asked, “What do pirates do?”

“Oh, they take ships and burn them. They get money and bury it in places where nobody can find it. And... kill everybody on the ships,” said Tom.

Slowly their talk stopped. Huck slept easily. Tom and Joe had more difficulty getting to sleep. Their conscience (良知) started to work. They began to fear that it was wrong to run away, and they thought of the stolen meat, and worried that it was bad to steal.

1Why did the boys want to leave?

A.They were uninterested in their study.

B.They felt they were not loved by others.

C.Being pirates could bring them much money.

D.Floating on the sea allowed them to learn more.

2How did the boys get to Jackson’s Island?

A.In a boat.B.By ship.C.On a raft.D.By swimming.

3What can we learn about the island?

A.It was easy to find food on it.

B.There was nobody else on it.

C.There were no trees or animals on it.

D.It was a good place to become pirates.

4How did Tom and Joe feel after they stopped talking about pirates?

A.Sleepy.B.Embarrassed.C.Ashamed.D.Relaxed.

5What might Tom most probably do the next day?

A.He would go back home.

B.He would become a pirate.

C.He would sail to other islands.

D.He would pay back what he stole.

【题目】 A group of swans(天鹅)flew down to a beach where a crow(公鸡) was jumping around. The crow watched them with disdain(鄙视).

“You have no flying skills at all!” He said to the swans, “All you can do is to move your wings. Can you turn over in the air? No, that’s beyond you. Let’s have a flying competition. I’ll show you what real flying is!”

One of the swans, a strong young male, accepted the challenge. The crow flew up and began to show his skills. He flew in circles, performed other flying tricks, and then came down and looked proudly at the swan.

Now it was the swan’s turn. He flew up, and began flying over the sea. The crow flew after him, making all kinds of comments about his flying. They flew on and on till they couldn’t see the land and there was nothing but water on all sides. The crow was making fewer and fewer comments. He was now so exhausted that he found it hard to stay in the air, and had to struggle(努力)to keep himself from falling into the water.

The swan pretended not to notice, and said, “Why do you keep touching the waterbrother

Is that another trick?”

“No,” said the crow. He knew he had lost the competition, “I’m in trouble because of my pride! If you don’t help me, I’ll lose my life…”
