If the temperature rises by 5 degrees tomorrow, you will probably take off just one coat. But such a change in the average world temperature would be a serious problem. Many animals and plants would not be able to deal with these changes, and would die.
The UNEP(联合国环境规划署) released(发布)the Report 2012 on November 21, 2012. It says that if we don’t take action now, the world temperature will have risen by 3 to 5 degrees by the end of this century.
A large rise in temperatures could be terrible for us and for many other living things on Earth. Sea levels will rise because higher temperatures will cause melting ice flow into the sea.Large coastal (沿海的) cities in countries such as the Netherlands and Bangladesh could be flooded.
Some plants such as corn and sugarcane (甘蔗) will not grow well in higher temperatures. Some countries, such as Brazil and parts of Africa, will not have enough food. The change may cause less rain and even make some places very dry.
On November 26, people from around 200 nations and regions gathered again in Doha (多哈) for the annual UN climate talks.“Climate change is coming to all human beings and effective actions need to be taken to deal with it.”president of the conference said at the opening ceremony.

1970 was “World Conservation(保护) Year”. The United Nations wanted everyone to know that the world is at risk(危险).They hoped that people would do something quickly to conserve nature.

Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1,300 plants, trees and flowers in Holland, but now only 860 are existing. The others have been destroyed by modern man and his technology.

Here is another example. In 1620, about half the USA was covered by forests. In 1850, about a third was covered by forests. Today the forests have almost gone. A lot of good land has gone with them, leaving only sand. Today too many trees are still being cut down.

We’re changing the earth, the air and water. We can’t live without these things. If we go on like this, we shall destroy ourselves. A lot of people know that conservation is necessary. Many things have been done to save our world. For example, people plant more and more trees on the hills. In a small town in the USA a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometers of their river. Young people may hear about conservation through a record by the name of NO ONE’S GOING TO CHANGE OUR WORLD. It was made by Scales, Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from it will help to conserve wild plants and animals. In China, a new Great Wall has been built across the northern part of the country to stop the sand from moving towards the rich farmland in the south.

1.What year was 1970?

______________________________________________________________

2.What did the United Nations hope ?

______________________________________________________________

3.How much land in the USA is covered by forests in 1850?

______________________________________________________________

4.Can you give us an example that people have done to save our world?

5.What has a new Great Wall been built for?

We need to be responsible for our environment. Being a frugal consumer(节俭的消费者) is one way to help. But,what exactly does that mean?

Use It Up. You can use things up instead of wasting them. Squeeze that last bit of toothpaste out of the tube. Use the last little piece of soap. Don’t  throw away any bits of the biscuit at the bottom of the box.

Wear It Out. You do not always need to have new things. Suppose your sneakers have broken laces, but they still fit you. Repair them and wear them longer. You don’t have the latest iPhone until the old one doesn’t work any more. Then you can get a new one. Think twice before replacing something that still works.

Make It Do. When something you want is not on hand, look for something else that you already have to take its place. Suppose you are packing your lunch for tomorrow and want a butter sandwich. You are out of butter. Have a cheese sandwich instead so that you can use all of the cheese. Learn to fix broken toys instead of just throwing them away. With a little thought, you can make something do,instead of buying something new.

Do Without. Think about all those things that you would like to have. Do you really need them? How long will you really play with that new toy you saw on TV? Making the things that we want uses up your world’s  resources(资源)。 And, getting rid of the things we don’t want any more takes up even more resources and space.

1. What do we need to be responsible for?(请将答案写在答题纸上)

2.How do we deal with the last little piece of soap?(同上)

3. When do we need to get a new iPhone?(同上)

4. What should we do when something we want is not on hand?(同上)

5.What does the writer want to tell us?(同上)
