In Canada,a school has made some of its students very happy by canceling homework for this year. Students from Grade One to Grade Six at College de Saint-Ambroise will be part of a one-year experiment to see if they actually do better in school without homework.
Some parents think it is a bad idea. They say homework is a way for them to keep track of (了解 的动态) how their children are doing at school,and to help their children if they have problems. However,the headmaster says they will send home an exercise book so that parents can see how their children are doing.
Many people believe that homework is important because it teaches children to be more disciplined (遵守纪律的) and to manage their time better. They say it also reinforces (力口强) what the students have learnt in school. But other people think homework makes the children less interested in learning. They say children lives are too busy,and they need to spend more time with their families or just playing.
Some teachers say that homework is not fair. Some students can get help from their parents or computers,which makes their homework easier. Other students have much housework at home,like looking after younger brothers and sisters,so they have less time to spend on homework.
Prince of Wales Public School tried a similar experiment six years ago. The school canceled homework for a year and found that the students’ grades improved.
