We were doing the best to control the fire of the burning garage (车库). Outside, I heard the sounds of cats crying. I couldn’t stop—I would have to look for the cats after the fire was put out.

??? It took a long time to finally bring the big fire under control. No one inside was hurt. At that point I was free to find out where the cat noises were from. There was still a lot of smoke and heat coming from the building. I followed the meowing to the sidewalk in front of the garage. There, crying and huddled (挤作一团) together, were five frightened kittens (小猫). They must have been inside the building, as their fur was badly hurt.

??? I wanted to find the mother cat. It was clear that she had gone into the burning garage and carried out all her babies, one by one—unbelievable.

??? We finally found her. Her paws and face were blackened, and her fur was burned all over. You could even see her reddened skin under the burned fur. She could hardly move. I picked her up, and she relaxed in my arms as much as her pain would allow. I decided to save this brave little cat and her family.

??? The vet told me they would watch the kittens and their mother for the night, but they weren’t confident about the mother’s chances.

??? About a week later, I found out she was going to live. We named her Scarlet because of her reddened skin.

??? I was happy to see Scarlet get together with the kittens again. She touched each of them, nose to nose. She had been in danger for five times and it had paid off. All of her babies had survived.

??? As a fireman, I see heroic acts every day. But what Scarlet showed me that day was the kind of bravery that can only come from a mother’s love.

C. The writer didn’t find the cats until the smoke and heat were gone.

D. The mother cat moved all her babies out of the fire to a safe place.

2.Why did the writer decide to save the cats?

A. Because he was amazed at the mother cat’s courage.

B. Because the cats attracted many people’s attention.

C. Because he didn’t want to see any living things die.

D. Because it had taken him much time and effort to save them.

We were standing at the top of a church not far from my home. I didn’t know why.

“Look down,” Father said. I tried and saw the square in the center of the village. And I saw the streets to the square. “See, Elsa,” Father said. “There is more than one way to the square. If you can’t get where you want to go by one road, try another.”

Earlier that day, I asked Mother to do something about what we had for lunch at school. But she didn’t think the food was as bad as I said. When I turned to Father for help, he brought me to the church.

At school the next day, I filled a bottle with the soup for our lunch and took it home. I told the cook to pour the soup in a plate and bring it to Mother. She drank it and cried out, “What’s the matter with the soup today?” I at once told her what I had done , and Mother said that she would take up the matter of lunches at school the next day .

I won’t forget her advice

I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago. Her husband died of a heart attack. About a week after his death, she shared some of her insights(见解)with us.

The class was nearly over. She said, “Before class is over, I would like to share with all of you an important thought.”

“Each of us is put here on Earth to learn, share, love, enjoy and give all by ourselves. We must make the best of every single day.”

Her eyes were beginning to water and she went on, “So I would like you all to make me a promise. From now on, on your way to school, or on your way home, find something beautiful to notice. It doesn’t have to be something you see — it could be a nice smell — perhaps of freshly baked bread, or it could be the sound of the breeze slightly blowing the leaves in the trees.”

“Please look for these things, and love them. For, although it may seem common, these things are the stuff(素材)of life. They are the little things we are put here on Earth to enjoy. They are the things we often take for granted. We must make it a point to notice them, for at any time it can all be taken away.”

The class was completely quiet. We picked up our books and went out of the room silently. That afternoon, I noticed more things on my way home from school than I had that whole term.

I usually think of that teacher and try to enjoy all of those things that we sometimes overlook (忽略).

Take notice of something special you see during your lunch hour today. Walk barefoot along the beach at sunset. For as we get older, it is not the things we did that we regret(后悔), but the things we didn’t do.

A.on her way to school

B.on her way home

C.at the beginning of class

3.The underlined word “breeze” (in Paragraph 4) means ____________?

A.colourful cloud

B.white snow

C.light wind

D.heavy rain

4.What is the teacher’s advice?

A.We should love life and enjoy things around us.

B.We should share our important thoughts with others.

C.We should never feel sorry for what we have done.

D.We should do importand things and overlook little ones.
