Every year several thousand people are killed(ɱº¦) on the roads in Great Britain. Every year between one and two hundred thousand people are hurt. These people are killed or hurt in road accidents.

There are rules to make the roads safe, but people do not always obey the rules(×ñÊعæÔò). They are careless. If everybody obeys the rules, the roads will be much safer. How can we make the roads safer?

Remember this rule. In Great Britain traffic keeps to the left. Cars, buses and bikes must all keep to the left side of the road. In most other countries traffic keeps to the right.

Before crossing the road, stop and look both sides. Look right and left. Then, if you are sure that the road is clear, it is safe to cross the road. If you see small children or old people, help them to cross the road. We must teach small children to cross the road safely. We must always set them a good example. Small children must not play in the street.

3.Which is NOT right?

A. Before crossing the road, we should stop and look at both ways.

B. In our country traffic keeps to the right.

C. Few people die in the traffic accidents in Great Britain.

D. Streets are not safe places for playing.

4.The underlined sentence ¡°the road is clear¡± means that______.

A. you can see very clearly on the road B. the road is very clean

C. the road is not noisy D. there is no car or bus running

5.The safe way to cross the road is to_______.

My grandfather is eighty years old now. He always complains about how fast things have changed, and he often says that life used to be better.

Families aren't families they used to be. A lot of families have broken up. If husband and wife have problems with their marriage, they no longer stay together. And mothers used to stay at home and take care of their children, but now not more. Everyone is busy working. Mothers used to spend all day cooking in the kitchen. But now the family don't eat home?cooked food any more.

And the cars! No one walks any more. More and more people drive. Students used to walk 5 miles to school every day, even in winter. But nowadays students don't. And in school, children don't have to think any more. In math class, for example, they used to add, subtract, multiply and divide (¼Ó¼õ³Ë³ý) in their heads. Instead, they use calculators.

And people today have TV and computers, and they don't talk to each other any more. They are too busy to talk, too busy to eat, too busy to think.

When I first went to Britain, a lot of things seemed strange to me. For example, people drove on the left side of the road and many people carried an umbrella all the time. There were also many other things that I found really ¡ø .

The first thing I noticed was how polite British people were. When I got on the bus, the driver would greet me; when people got off the bus, they would say ¡°Thank you¡± to the driver; when I went into a shop, I would be greeted by a smiling salesman who would say, ¡°Can I help you?¡±

The family I stayed with were very nice, but their house was full of oddities (¹ÖÏÖÏó). Firstly, there were carpets (µØ̺) everywhere, even in the bathroom. Also, the bathroom was full of surprises. The first time I tried to wash my hands I burned myself. The cold and hot water came out of different taps (Ë®ÁúÍ·)! Then, when I tried to dry my hair I couldn't find a socket (²å×ù) for my hairdryer. Maybe that wasn't such a big surprise. More surprising was the fact that British people didn't take their shoes off when they went into a house ¡ª can you imagine?

I guess that for British people all of these things are normal. It's only when you visit a foreign country that you realize that what you think is normal is not. Normality depends on where you are.

A large part of China experienced larger amounts of smog ( Îíö² ) than usual this January and the air was badly polluted. The distance ( ¾àÀë ) one could see was shorter than 1,000 meters in Beijing, Tianjin, and the provinces of Hebei, Henan, Shandong and Anhui. In some areas, it was down to 200 meters.

People usually set off firecrackers ( ±¬Öñ ) to celebrate Spring Festival. But because of the smog, this year seemed very quiet. It was really different. A man called Zhang Wei said that his friends and he hadn¡¯t set off a single firecracker.

¡° We all suffered ( ÔâÊÜ ) from last month¡¯s smog. If we don¡¯t call an end to the firecrackers, the environment will get worse and worse during the holiday. ¡± said Zhang Wei. He called on more people to set off fewer firecrackers during this year¡¯s Spring Festival by putting up a notice in his neighborhood.

More Chinese looked forward to celebrating ( Çì×£ ) the holiday in a greener way . They decided not to set off firecrackers. They also decided not to waste food . They said the new celebrations sounded fashionable.

To clean the sky ,more than ten provinces including Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangsu have started to use national 4 standard ( ±ê×¼ ), which is expected to reduce ( ¼õÉÙ ) vehicle emission ( ³µÁ¾ÅÅ·Å ) by 30% to 50%. Beijing even has started to use the stricter national standard.

We still have a lot to do to improve the air quality. For example, using public transportation as much as possible is not a hard thing for us to do, but it matters a lot .

Without proper planning, tourism(ÂÃÓÎÒµ) can cause problem. For example, too many tourists can make public places crowded, which are also enjoyed by the local people. If tourists cause too much traffic, the local people will feel unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and treat them impolitely. But they forget how much tourism can help the local economy(¾¼Ã). It is important to think about how tourism affects the local people. The local customs and beauty should be kept to attract the tourists by the local government. The local government should also care about the health and happiness of local people when developing tourism.

Too much tourism can he a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people can leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry because they can make more money there. As a result, other parts of the local economy can become worse.

On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs£¬and businesses can also lose money. It coats much money to build large hotels, airports, first?class roads, and other support facilities(ÉèÊ©) needed by tourist attractions. For example, each room of the first?class tourism hotel usually costs about 50 thousand dollars. If the rooms of the hotel aren't used most of the time, the owner of the hotel will lose money.

Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity and so on. All of these support facilities cost money. If these facilities are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

Autumn days give us some fantastic and lively colors. Then, suddenly,

the city is covered (¸²¸Ç) with a thick sheet of snow. It is during this

special time of year that one of the most popular and enjoyed holidays

in America appears: Christmas. This time is so special that schools

often give students a two-week- break from their schoolwork to enjoy

the winter holidays.

My family takes this chance to spend two weeks together. We build a tree and decorate it with many colorful lights. On top of the tree, we put a glowing star. As night sets in, the dark room is warmly lit up by a bright Christmas tree.

Then, on Christmas Eve (ǰϦ), our family has all the traditional American foods: turkey, sweet potatoes, vegetables, nuts, pies, and other good dishes. On this very night, there is a mysterious (ÉñÃصÄ) story, named Santa Claus, will fly from the North Pole and give presents to the children under the Christmas tree. However, Santa only gives presents to those who have behaved well the whole year. So children across America try to do one last good deed before the night by baking (ºæ¿¾) Santa some cookies, trying to ask him for presents. This is why Santa is so fat!

That night, children are often excited, hope to find presents. The next day, they rushed out of bed very early. Then, the whole family opens presents and spends the whole day relaxing.

4.When does the family open the presents?

A. On Christmas Eve. B. On Christmas Day.

C. When children see Santa Claus. D. When children bake some cookies.

5.Which of the following is NOT TRUE?
