    Dr. Mae Jemison was the first African-American woman to enter space. She was part of the crew (全体船员) of the Space Shuttle Endeavour in September, 1992.

    Mae Jemison was born in Alabama in1956. A few years after her birth, the family moved to Chicago.

    Mae began to go to school there. She was an excellent student and graduated from high school when she was 16. She went to Stanford University and studied engineering there, and then she went to Cornell University to study medicine.

    After becoming a doctor, Mae joined the Peace Corps in 1983, working as a medical officer in the West African countries of Sierra Leone and Liberia. NASA chose Dr. Mae Jemison for astronaut training in 1987. After training hard for a long time, she travelled into space for the first time in 1992.

    Dr. Mae Jemison is an excellent dancer and is interested in the theatre. Some of her other hobbies are photography, skiing and studying foreign languages. She speaks Russian, Japanese and of course, English.

    In 1993, Dr. Mae Jemison left NASA. She then works on projects to advance technology and improve healthcare in developing countries.
