On March 14, math and science lovers around the world celebrated a special day: Pi Day.

Pi is equal to about 3.14, but the number goes on endlessly. It is sometimes written in Green π. People also love trying to memorize the digits (数学) of pi and competing against others to see who can remember the most. Many teachers hold class contests to see how many numbers their students can memorize. The Gummess World Record for reciting the most digits of pi is held by Li Chao of China, who successfully recited pi put to nearly 67,890 decimal places.

Above all, Pi Day is about having fun with the number. People celebrate Pi Day by eating or throwing pie and with fun pi-related games and activities. This year, Princeton, new Jersey, held a Pi Event” where people walked 3.14 miles together. Just like the number itself, the possibilities for Pi Day are truly endless.

An ice cream sundae（圣代）is a special treat that many enjoy. And in summer it is the perfect dessert to cool down with after a hot day. But in those days ice cream cost five cents and adding the chocolate syrup made it too expensive for Berners to continue serving the ice cream that way for the same price. At last Berners came up with an idea — to sell ice cream with chocolate syrup on Sundays only.

Many years later the new name was invented by an unknown trader who thought the treat should have a name as fancy as its taste. That is how today when we enjoy ice cream with chocolate syrup it is now called a “sundae”.

Everyone knows the importance of food safety. Recently, China has published a new food safety regulation（法规）to take stricter supervision（监管）over school food safety. The regulation came into effect on April 1, and replaced an earlier one which was introduced in 2002.

“It is necessary to publish such a regulation to improve the health standards of school food,” said an officer, who works in the Ministry of Education（教育部）.

Under the new regulation, school officers from kindergartens to high schools are required to eat together with students during the school meals. The plan will guide them to pay more attention to school food safety, as well as find food problems in time.

Student menus, food sources, suppliers（供应商）and other food information are required to be shown in public by schools once a week. According to this regulation, students’ parents are also invited to eat with students in school to take away their doubts.

The regulation said schools should keep an eye on developing students’ healthy eating habits and pay close attention to food safety. In general, food stores are not allowed in kindergartens, primary schools and high schools. Also, all the markets should not sell food high in salt, sugar or fat which may do harm to students’ health.
