One Sunday afternoon, I went shopping at Wal-Mart . But I never thought I would have a life changing experience at WalMart.

Although my thoughts were only on speed, the checkout line I was standing in wasn’t moving as quickly as I wanted, and I looked towards the cashier.

There stood a man in his seventies, wearing glasses and a nice smile. I thought, well, he’s an old guy!

For the next few minutes I watched him. He greeted every customer before scanning the items. Sure, his words were the usual, “How’s it going?” But he did something different—he listened to people carefully and then he would reply to what they had said

I thought it was strange. I has grown used to people asking me how I was doing simply out of conversational habit. I could say, “I just found out I have six months to live,” and someone would reply, “Have a great day!”

But that wasn't the end.

He gave them the change, walked around the counter (柜台), and hugged them with his right hand in an act of friendship. He looked at the customers in the eyes. “I want to thank you for shopping here today,” he told them. “You have a great day. Bye-bye.”

The smiling looks on the faces of the customers were priceless. All had been touched by his simple gesture—and in a place they never expected. They would gather their things and walk out, smiling.

Of course, he did the same to me and I got to know his name—Marty.

Who was that guy? It was as if Sam Walton (沃尔玛的创始人)had come back from the dead and invaded this old guy’s body.

I had never walked away from that shop feeling like that.

Peter and Paul had a permission from their parents to camp in a field close to their farm. But, being adventurous boys, they knew it would be more to camp in the woods that lay beyond the river. Excitedly, the boys went away with their tent and food.

Carrying their heavy load, the two brothers walked along the riverbank, noticing the distance or the sun beating down. They were eager to reach their destination before lunchtime. As they entered the cool, shadowy woods, they began to search for a suitable camping spot. They were not even sure of where they had set up their camp. They set in for a few minutes until Peter had a bright idea. “Why don’t we look for clues(线索) the way trackers do in the movies? We weren’t careful about how we walked, so I’m sure we would have left behind some broken tree branches and leaves. ”

Carefully, the boys followed the marks that they had left, until finally they found their campsite. Hurriedly, they packed their belongings and set off the direction of the river.

Try reading the following sentences as fast as you can. “She sells seashells by the seashore. The shells she sells are surely seashells. So if she sells shells on the seashore, I’m sure she sells seashore shells.”

Not very easy, was it? What you’ve just read is called a tongue twister (绕口令). It is an exercise made up of sounds that are hard to pronounce in order to help people pronounce words faster and more correctly. Try the next example.

“Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper. Did Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled peppers? If Pete Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?”

Tongue twisters usually do not have much meaning. They are just designed to improve people’s ability (能力) to pronounce words. Although they may be very difficult, these exercises are very important to people who are trying to speak English correctly. This is because tongue twisters help people to tell the differences between similar sounds.

So if you wish to pronounce words more smoothly, you’d better try picking out some tongue twisters and practicing them.

1.Tongue twisters are helpful in improving skills.

A.listening B.pronunciation

C.writing D.communication

2.The first tongue twister is hard because .

A.it is very boring to read B.it teaches us a lot of knowledge

C.we dont know who she is C.the sounds of s and sh are similar

3.The passage is probably taken from in a school newsaper.

A.Story Time B.Latest News

C.Study Garden D.Lost and Found
