Let's Save Our Language Heritage

Each year on Feb 21, UNESCO holds an International Mother Language Day£¨IMLD£©. The event is to draw attention to the disappearance of the world's languages£ºdozens of them are vanishing each year. UNESCO sees this as a tragedy£¨±¯¾ç£©, and with good reason.

What happens when a language dies out? Something huge is lost¡ªnot just sounds and marks but the way that people make sense of the world and communicate with each other. And it is through language that we have culture and tradition. Kill a language and all this is killed too.

Through IMLD, more people are becoming aware of the destruction of linguistic£¨ÓïÑÔѧµÄ£©diversity in modern times and trying to stop it. Google's 2012 Endangered Languages Project is a good example. Speakers and protectors of endangered languages upload text, audio and video files to the project site. They want to introduce people to the wonders of the way that people communicate and express themselves around the world.

The Myaamia Project is a similar kind of effort. This is an attempt to revive£¨ÖØÐÂʹÓã©the language spoken by the Miami and Illinois tribes£¨²¿Â䣩of the US. Project members work to encourage people to study and communicate with this language, which formally died out in the 1960s.

These activities, which breathe life into languages on the verge£¨±ßÔµ£©of extinction, might seem old-fashioned to some. But those who work to keep languages alive are not enslaved£¨Êø¸¿£©to the past. They are enthusiastic young people who design apps and use social media to champion their activities. As the US-based social event calendar website Upcoming puts it, they¡°spread the word" to save the word.

So, while the problem of disappearing languages remains a very serious one, there is hope. We all have a special feeling for our mother tongue, although those of us who speak one that is not endangered might not always be aware of it. This is why we should recall£¨»ØÒ䣩the wise words of the late president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela£º¡°If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart.¡±

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿ How do you feel when your teacher asks you to work on a group project with other students? Do you like to work together with others or work alone?

The Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA, carried out a survey of students' ability to work together in groups. They found that students who do well on tests by themselves are also likely to be better at working with other people.

This finding was true for many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test scores are high, also did well in working together to solve problems. But this was not the case for every country. Chinese students, who tend£¨Ç÷Ïò£©to have high scores as well, displayed just average collaborative£¨ºÏ×÷µÄ£©skills.

¡°One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers focus too much on grades, ¡±said Zhao Zhongxin, former vice president of the Chinese Family Education Association.¡°Students have a lot of exam pressure and they view school as a place for competition.¡±

¡°However, collaborative skills are very important for preparing students for today's society, ¡±he added.¡°Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve this skill.¡±

Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls tend to be better than boys at working together. They said girls show more positive attitudes toward relationships, which means they are more willing to listen to others' opinions.

PISA also found that the classroom environment tends to influence how well students collaborate. In classes where there are a lot of activities that require communication, such as class debates, students tend to have better attitudes toward collaborating.

¡¾1¡¿Which of the following is NOT one of the survey's findings?

A.Those who do well on tests are also better at working with others.

B.Collaborative skills are more important than scores for students' futures.

C.Girls are better at working with others than boys.

D.The classroom environment can influence students' ability to work in groups.

¡¾2¡¿What can teachers do to improve their students' ability to work with others?

A.Give students high scores on every test.B.Help students to get used to exam pressure.

C.Make girls work with girls instead of boys.D.Arrange more communicative activities in class.

¡¾3¡¿What's the passage mainly about?

A.How to improve collaborative skills.

B.Who tend to cooperate in working.

C.The result of a survey on students' collaborative ability.

D.The process of a survey on students' collaborative ability.
