All over the world people enjoy sports. Sports help to keep people healthy, happy and help them to live longer.
Sports change with the season. People play different games in winter and summer.
Games and sports often grow out of people's work and everyday activities. The Arabs use horses or camels in much of their everyday life; they use them in their sports, too.
Some sports are so interesting that people everywhere go in for them. Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in all countries near the sea or in those with many rivers.
Some sports or games go back thousands of years, like running or jumping. Chinese boxing, for example, has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new. Neither one is a hundred years old yet. People are inventing new sports or games all the time.

In the last 500 years, nothing about people-not their clothes, ideas, or languages-has changed as much as what they eat. The original(最初的) chocolate drink was made from the seeds of a certain kind of tree by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the World during the 1500's, and although it was very expensive, it quickly became popular. In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important meeting places. Some still exist today.
The potato is also from the New World. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people died from hunger when the crop failed during the “Potato Famine” of 1845-6.
There are many other foods that have traveled from South America to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil(巴西) is now the world's largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in many other countries of South America. But it is native to Ethiopia.
