    　　Albert Selmer is a German businessman．He was surprised during his latest trip to Beijing．When he got into a taxi on Chang'an Avenue, the driver greeted him in English!“This couldn't be imagined eight years ago when I first visited Beijing,”said Selmer．

    　　In fact, a lot of Beijing citizens(市民)are learning English in this Olympic city now．If Selmer knew this, he wouldn't have been so surprised．Shop assistants, bus and taxi drivers and even policemen are learning English to welcome the 2008 Olympics．They learn useful expressions, greetings, how to give directions and how to introduce themselves．

    　　In August, 2002, the city government started the“Beijing Citizens' English Speaking Plan”．In 5 years, the percentage(百分比)of Beijing citizens who can speak English will be raised to around 30 percent from 15 percent now．
