【题目】 Do you often listen to music at loud volumes(音量)?1 Over 1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss because of listening to loud noise for long periods of time. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes can harm your hearing.

2 It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 dB(分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100dB.

Loud noise is harmful to the inner(内的) ear. Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells(细胞) in our inner ears. These cells notice sounds. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. 3 Once this happens, it’s hard to get your hearing back.

Some people might think that their music isn’t all that loud. 4 For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.

The “safe level” for most sound is below 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week. A level of 80 dB is about equal to (相当于) the noise of a subway.

Here is some advice on safe listening. 5 They do a better job of stopping outside noise, so you can listen at a lower volume. Don’t listen to loud music on your headphones for a long time. Follow the 60:60 rule: listen to music at 60 percent of your headphones’ maximum(最大的) volume for no more than 60 minutes a day.

A.This is what causes hearing loss.

B.But this can depend on where you are.

C.The United Nations has standards for safe listening.

D.Over-the-ear headphones are better than in-ear ones.

E.You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing.

【题目】 It happens to all of us. It is the end of the term and your teacher gives you your report card. You look at it and your heart stops because you realize that your parents are going to be very angry. This is the classic case of a bad report card! There is nothing you can do to change the past. So, what can you do now?

Grades are how most schools evaluate(评价)students and they are pretty important. The problem is that we do not always get good grades we (or our parents) want. After a bad report card, it is important to figure out what to do next.

The first thing to do is to talk to your teacher. Find out how your grades are calculated(计算). Is the problem a bad test, lack of participation(参与)in class, or a failure to complete homework? Next, if the problem is something you can solve on your own (such as not doing your homework), make a promise to change your behavior! Thirdly, if you have been studying hard and still get a bad grade, you probably need some extra help with your classes. Talk to your teacher and explain your situation. He or she will tell you where you can receive the extra help you need. Lastly, make a detailed plan of how you will improve your grades. Write down the plan and have it ready when you talk to your parents. That’s a good way to make your parents less angry.

While all parents want their children to get good grades, most understand that every report card is not perfect. The important thing is that you show your parents you have a plan to improve your grades for next time. Always remember, many of the world’s most successful people failed many times before they became successful. They learned from their failures, and you should, too!
